2008 Spring and Summer Recap

► Andy Hrovat, a 1998 graduate of St. Edward High School in Lakewood, won the Olympic Team Trials at 84 kilograms in Men's Freestyle and will represent the United States of America in the 2008 Olympics. He is the first Olympian from Ohio since Toccara Montgomery in 2004 and the first in Men's Freestyle since Mark Coleman in 1992. Hrovat won two Ohio high school state championships at St. Edward and was an NHSCA Senior All-American.

► Tommy Rowlands, the defending U.S. Senior National Champion at 120 kilograms in Freestyle, placed second in the Olympic Team Trials and is an alternate for the 2008 Olympics. Rowlands was placed fifth at the World Championships in 2007 and was ranked as high as third in the world. Rowlands coaches at The Ohio State University, where he graduated from and was a two-time National Champion as well as a four-time All-American. He was a 1999 graduate of Bishop Ready High School in Columbus, where he was a two-time Ohio high school state champion, USAW Junior Freestyle National Champion and an NHSCA Senior National Champion.

► Harry Lester, a two-time bronze medalist at the World Championships, announced his retirement following a third place finish at 66 kilograms in Greco-Roman at the Olympic Team Trials. Lester was a 2001 graduate from Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy in Cuyahoga Falls, where he won four Ohio high school state championships and placed six times at the USAW Freestyle and Greco-Roman National Championships.

► Jack Effner resigned from his position as head wrestling coach at Cleveland State University after ten successful seasons. He won 71 dual meets and sent 37 Viking wrestlers to the National Championships. Effner extended CSU's streak of 43 straight years of qualifying a wrestler for the National Championships, including his son Marcus who was a two-time qualifier. Both of his sons, Jason and Marcus, had successful wrestling careers for the Vikings. Effner retires with a career record of 158-133-8.

► Tim Dernlan accepted the position of head wrestling coach at Ashland University. Dernlan was a 1993 graduate from West Liberty-Salem High School, where he won three Ohio high school state championships. He was an All-American while wrestling at Purdue University before moving to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs as a fully-funded athlete. He had a very successful freestyle career that included winning a title in the U.S. Senior National Championships and a spot in the 2004 Olympic Trials.

► Carl Amerine accepted the position of head wrestling coach at Wilmington College. Amerine was a two-time All-American for the Quakers and won 88 matches before he graduated in 2007. After graduating, he spent a year as an assistant coach at Wabash College. Amerine is a 2001 alumnus of Franklin Heights High School in Columbus, where he placed sixth in the state as a senior.

► The Samsons team represented Ohio in a big way at the AAU Disney Duals as they took home this year's championship. One of their most tightly contested bouts was against their home rivals, the Dragons, who they defeated 25-21 in a critical matchup.
