I e-mailed Tom...Tom Ryan...Coach Tom Ryan about that and he said that the Buffalo Open and another open would serve as evaluators in the process.

He also mentioned things being easier in the heavyweight situation due to the red-shirt possibility for Hiles. As for Johnstone and Nemec, no redshirt is available.

Road trip to Buffalo????????????? <excited>

If you need an early wrestling fix Buffalo is the place to be on Sunday. The tournament willl be held at SUNY Buffalo (which is actually in Amherst, NY). Wrestling starts at 10 a.m. The Buckeyes are planning on having a large contingent there. There will probably be more than 30 Buckeyes in action.

Here are the results from last year. This does not appear to be a real strong tournament, but things could change.

Bucks don't want a strong event to start out. They want to get the kinks out for the tougher comp down the road.

When you see who travels to Las Vegas to wrestle 157 you are going to know who is going to be the primary starter or who is ahead early. Johnstone and Nemec will each compete at Buffalo and NC State Opens, Buckeye Duals, and National Duals. With both on the clock neither can count on having the spot for the year by being the early leader. Another sign of where they are is who is the starter at the begining of the B10 dual meet season and who gets the majority of the B10 starts. The wrestle-off that people want to see might not happen until the last week of February, it could occur in Buffalo or NC State, or it may never happen.

At heavyweight Morrison is the early favorite to start because he is a returning letterman and is on the clock. At the same time Morrison is not being handed anything and will have to fight for his spot. John Hiles will begin the year as a potential redshirt but probably has the best chance of any of the true freshmen to see varsity time.

Morrison and Hiles will head to Buffalo and NC State with one goal; win a title. To a degree both wrestlers each control their own destiny. If they wrestle each other, they wrestle and the coaches will consider the results. If not practice and competition evaluations become more important. Just because Morrison appears to be the guy in November and December doesn't make him the guy in February and March. The better Morrison wrestlers or the longer Hiles isn't in the lineup the more likely Hiles redshirts.

With the selection process for NCAA doesn't it become more problematic for wrestlers to split time starting?

Nope. You don't qualify based on the rank. You qualify based on the tournament. The tournament bid quantity is based on the ranks.

I did not mean to imply Tom Ryan would be shuffling the lineup like a baseball manager works his relievers. In a baseball comparison the non starter would be the fifth starter or the long reliever that makes a spot start. I don't think you are going to see a lot of sharing of time per say just several different opportunities to get into the lineup.

My take on 157

Everyone is going to compete at Buffalo and NC State.

At the Buckeye Duals I believe you see three matches with one wrestler getting one match and the other with two. (Johnstone and Nemec)

The team can only take ten to Vegas so that is the "primary starter reference" It is likely based on everything that occurs in November. (practice, competition, head to head, gut feeling, etc)

OSU wrestles two duals before the National Duals, Edinboro and Kent State. With Gillespie at 157 you take your stud to Pennsylvania with no disrespect intended to the KSU. I don't know who starts against KSU.

At the national duals they will likely bring a 2-4 reserves to cover themselves in case of injury while giving the team some added flexibility. Two easy choices would be a 125 and 157; there are likely a few upperweights making the trip as well. Just because they travel doesn't mean they wrestle or will get more than one match. Last season Enright wrestled 141 against WVU and I think Timbs was there as well.

OSU next competition is two weeks later at Hofstra. Johnstone beat Bonilla-Bowman last year, he may be the guy to make this trip.

At that point there are eight Big Ten duals and three months of evaluation. If there is going to be a change or a challenge here is a spot. I think there will be very few changes in the lineup without an injury. A spot start could be given if someone is injured, overweight, or a coach is trying to send a message or protect a seed. (see OSU-MSU 2008)

At heavyweight the situation is different because Hiles has an available year. Until he is in the lineup he is a redshirt. Morrison is not going to be handed the job; but he controls his own destiny. If he wrestles and beats Hiles twice how do you not take him to Vegas or burn John's redshirt at the Buckeye Duals? At the same time Hiles can make a statement with a win this weekend and perhaps take control with a second win at NC State. If they split then what do you do?

I don't want to speculate on the rest of the season at 285 but the starter has to perform and that is the bottom line. If they lay an egg than the reserve needs to be ready to step up or step in.
