Discussion Topic: St Edward wrestlers at Northwestern

The word on a few internet sites is that Mike Benefiel will not be wrestling for Northwestern. Jason Bryant cited a source that told him he is still in school there. We await confirmation one way or another, I guess.

If he is out, that seems to take Brian Roddy out of a redshirt (if that was the plan) into the starting lineup, assuming he can top Frank Battiglia, a RS frosh from Illinois.

Ben Kuhar appears to be the only 285 on the roster so he joins Keith Sulzer in the starting lineup for sure, apparently.

Kyle Bertin appears to have to battle three other wrestlers at 157:Robert Kellog RSFR from Iowa, Jamie Smith RSSO from Illinois, and the super recruit Jason Welch FR from California.

It's still unclear as to Benefiel's status. Posted rumors caused a thread on another forum to be deleted.

In the Michigan St. open Roddy and Kellogg were entered for Northwestern at 174. Roddy was pinned in the opening round and then reeled off 5 consi wins before dropping to 6th place. Kellogg went 2-2.
No sign of Battiglia. I'm still wondering if Roddy has a shot at starting, though I would think redshirting would be the play.

Bertin wrestled 165 going 2-2. Kuhar also went 2-2. Sulzer inj defaulted to 6th at 141.

Welch looks to be the starter at 157 given his performance over the weekend, and the fact that he's competing in the open division.

Bertin has to battle out Marella for a starting position. Marella is a very seasoned veteran.

174 is open, especially if Benefiel is out of the picture. Nick Hayes must have graduated since he wasn't on the competing group.

Sulzer is obviously at 141, NCAA qualifier last year, winning multiple matches.
