Central District 2008-2009

Top teams in Central Ohio (concerning the State Tournament)

Reynoldsburg and Marysville

Reynoldsburg : This team reminds me of the 2006 Raider team in that they are senior- laden and return some very good talent. Of those returning, they have state placers Few (5th), Sasfy (6th) and Cook (7th). If all three can place again, and they get some help from a couple of wrestlers, good things can happen. Help could come from district-placer Nein or Chang, Allen, Tennant. Nein missed going to the Schott last year by 2 points so help from him is very possible. The other three were a combined 2-6 at Darby but under Coach Allen, growth is possible! Consider that last year, their 215-pounder was a district alternate and ended up placing 6th at Darby.
I can see them securing 33 points at the Schott – and that’s on the low end, IMO – and that, on average, can get you about 13th place.

Marysville : The Monarchs also have a strong core returning in McCombs, Marsh and Weeks. All three placed last year (8th, 4th, 7th respectively) and accounted for 22 of the team’s 26 points earned last year. Much like Reynoldsburg, they have the key guys to reach the 30-point mark. Look for district-placer Tyler Bass to be one of the guys to step up and try to help his team rise to the top 10 at the Schott.

A snapshot of their schedule:
Harrison Duals - Harrison, Marysville, Glen Este, Hamilton, Milford, Campbell County, Whiteland, Springboro, Fairfield, Beech Grove

Central Ohio Duals - Marysville, Central Crossing, Dublin Scioto, Olentangy, Mount Vernon, Watkins, New Albany, Pickerington North, Davidson

Tri w/ Big Walnut and Cardington

Brecksville (nuff said)

2x4 vs. Miamisburg, Mason, ???

vs. Darby

Lakota West Duals

Josh Hepner Tournament (Austintown Fitch) - Alliance, Jackson, Lake, Lancaster, Monroeville, North Royalton, Ravenna, Springfield (Akron)

OCC Tournament
Marysville, Scioto, Jerome, W. North, W. South, W. Central, Olentangy, Liberty (will we see a Marsh/Demas match up?)

2x4 @ Coffman with Gahanna, DeSales

Watkins Memorial Tournament

I also wanted to highlight one of the teams representing the Central District at the State Duals:

State Duals *Reynoldsburg was invited to the State Duals but declined the offer.

Central Crossing: The Comets return a solid group of wrestlers…again! Led by seniors Austin Sanders and Chad Channel they have a strong supporting cast. Wrestlers like state qualifier Higgins, Wimer, Hardy, newly-acquired Perez, Fisher will all add to a fantastic light-weight group that will make it very difficult to score points often in a dual meet. This line-up is rounded out by heavyweight Schramm. They will need some kids from weight classes 152 to 215 to step up and a) win matches they shouldn’t or b) hold bonus points to a minimum in order for the Comet squad to take dual meets or garner big wins at the State Duals.

Schedule for Central Crossing:
Central Ohio Duals (Reynoldsburg, Marysville, Olentangy, Hilliard Davidson, and Pickerington North).

Monday Dec. 22 vs. DeSales

Brecksville Holiday Tournament. This tournament is expected to be even tougher (with the addition of several teams-including Wadsworth) than last year's tournament.

Sunday Jan. 11, Division I State Dual competition (St. Ed, Mass. Perry, Wadsworth, and Moeller look to be early favorites in this event)

On Jan. 17th @ Wapakoneta

Jan. 24, @ Mason for their James Horning Memorial Tournament. Lakota West and Mason head a strong 10 team field there.

Jan. 31 is the O.C.C. tournament. The Comets will do battle with both Hilliards, Dublin Coffman, U.A., both Worthingtons, and fellow SWCS Westland.

Feb. @ Watkins Memorial Invitational

Coach VanGundy said, "I like this schedule because of we get an opportunity to compete with all of the top DI programs in Central Ohio as well as state wide competitors like St. Ed's, Mass. Perry, Wadsworth, Lakota West, Mason, DeSales, Troy Christian, Marion Pleasant, Brecksville."

These could change due to injuries, eligibility issues, weight changes, or the silent silent patner...second cousin to Harvey the Rabbit, which is, "I'm lifting for football."
