Some of the Buckeye wrestlers are entered. An interesting mix of guys in the tournament. Weakley seeded #1 at 197. Northwestern freshman Jason Welch is going against Daryl Cocozzo in his next match, the guy who beat Nemec, but lost to Johnstone last week in Buffalo. P. Donohoe & G. Scott are there from Edinboro. Northwestern appears to have the entire team wrestling including NCAA Champ Herbert at 184. Cleveland State brought some guys too. Magrum lost in the 1st round 3-0 to a RS freshman from Northwestern. I'm going to follow his cons. matches today, along with the rest of the Buckeyes.

One noteable absence from NW lineup--Mike Benefiel. Is he hurt? Sick? Or are the rumors of his departure true?

I saw Marcel Clopton and Chase Skonieczny had both advanced to the quarters at 141 lbs frosh/soph division.

So they split them by year in this tournament? Is that normal for opens?

Please keep us informed...inquiring minds want to know!

It looks as if Weakley is the only one left for OSU. He will wrestle Blackwell from Kent in the semi's.

After getting pinned in his first match, Brian Roddy has ripped off 5 consecutive wins. That's a nice rebound.

Zach Thomusseit is in the finals for UPitt.

Jason Welch is in the finals at 157 after beating Daryl Cocozzo 6-5--same wrestler Johnstone beat in the Buffalo finals.

OU wrestled most of their young guys in the FR-SO division. Boing, Weinkam, Purdue, and Schuth made the finals. Silvers is in for 3/4. Steve Wilson in for 5/6.

In the Open division, Lindsey defaulted out in the quarters. Christensen and Morton each won several matches but didn't place. Tucker lost in the semis to the super frosh Welch 6-2 and will place top 6.

Missing today were Ison, Reedy, and Powell.

Nice to see Kline, Wilson, and Wrage get some wins in early competition.

Kent had several placers as well. Cogar, Witt, and Skonieczny are in the finals in the FR/SO division. Blackwell is in the finals in the Open Division including a decisive win over Weakley in the semis. Shuster and Myers are in for 3/4.

Solid results for the youngsters from both KSU and OU.

Quick breakdown:
Two divisions here - Open and Fresh/Soph. Open the better of the two, fresh/soph tends to be younger wrestlers that are redshirting (though some younger wrestlers were in the open)
The MSU Open is one of the best open tournaments in the country other than the Midlands, Las Vegas, or Southern Scuffle.

Fresh/Soph
125- Tim Silves (Ohio/Eaton) is wrestling for third
133- Darrin Boing (Ohio/Chanel) is in the final against Matt Bonson (Virginia)
141- Chase Skonieczny (Kent/Walsh Jesuit) is in the final, notably winning a match by DQ over Craig Wilson (ODU - true frosh) and by fall over Derek Valenti (UVA - true frosh). Mark Lewandowski (Buffalo) is the opposing surprising finalist
157- Jedd Moore (UVA/Marion Pleasant) is in a second straight finalis with two techs, major, 9-4 victory. No real "name" opposition so far, finals against Anthony Jones (MSU). Mallie Shuster (Kent) lost to Jones 10-8 is wrestling for third; included in the wrestleback run is a 9-3 win over Chris Kline (Ohio/Westerville North)
165- Tommy Weinkam (Ohio/Moeller) is in the finals, facing Dan Yates (Hesperia MI HS). James Myers (Kent/Indian Creek) for third, Steve Wilson (Ohio/Marion Pleasant) for fifth
174- Nick Purdue (Ohio/Genoa) is in the final, facing Curran Jacobs (Michigan State).
184- Erik Schuth (Ohio) is in the final, facing Joe Budi (ODU - true frosh). Casey Newburg (Kent/Northmont) finishes top six.
197- Keith Witt (Kent/Oak Harbor) is in the final against Adam Cogar (Kent/Barberton). Witt with three pins and a 6-1 decision - pins over 2x IN finalist Malone and state finalist Canfield, decision over state champ Nathan Jones. Cogar notably with a 7-3 victory over Dylan Wrage (Ohio). Chris Iammarino (Ohio/Brush) will finish top six.
285- Two of the top freshman heavies nationally are in the final, Nick Cook (Indiana) and Ben Apland (Michigan). Cook notably with a 4-1 decision over Hartshorn, Apland most notably with a 12-5 win over Clum. Matt Clum (Findlay/Galion) finishes top six.

Open Notes
125- Donahoe (Edinboro) v Precin (Northwestern) for first. Donahoe a former champion while Precin was arguably robbed in the national quarterfinal against eventual champion (Escobedo) last year. Pataky (Penn State) v Moser (Bloomsburg) 3rd, Keller (Cleveland State - true frosh) v Albright (Pitt - true frosh) 5th
133- Gomez (Michigan State) v Hutter (ODU). Gomez was a national semifinalist last year, Hutter a solid national qualifier. Hutter with a notable win over fellow national qualifier Marable (Bucknell). Marable v Conroy (Pitt) for 3rd, Palivoda (Cleveland State/Marysville) v Guffey (Bloomsburg) for 5th
141- Sulzer (Northwestern/St Edward) defaults out semis, Lindsey (Ohio/Moeller) defaults out quarters. Albright (Pitt) v Williams (ODU) is your final. Williams with a big win over the redshirt frosh Molinaro (Penn State), and also beating DI potential starters in Nauman (Pitt) and Trombly (MSU)
149- Garrett Scott (Edinboro) is in the finals with two pins, a major, and solid win. Nick Walpole (Indiana) is the finalist down low. Ryan Cubberly (Central) lost to Walpole in the semis 7-0 after knocking off potential DI starters (both have open wrestle-offs) in Balum (UVA) and Nadhir (NW). Cubberly has LeValley (Bucknell) next.
157- Kinser (Indiana) v Welch (NW - true frosh) in the final. Kinser beat Gonsor (UVA/St Edward) 4-2 in the quarter and then knocked off Moley (Bloomsburg) 3-2 in overtime. The notable on bottom defaulted to Tucker (Ohio/Martins Ferry) in the quarter - Coughlin (indiana). That's an open wrestle-off situation with Kinser and Coughlin. Welch with wins over the MSU starter, a very good backup for Edinboro, and then the OU starter. Tucker and Gonsor will finish top six.
165- Chris Brown (ODU) v Rex Kendle (MSU) in the final. Brown beat Perry last year in the duals at St Edward. Notable win for Kyle Bertin (NW/St Edward) over Michael Chaires (UVA), though Bertin lost the next match to Marella (NW) and then to Shannon (Findlay/Bluffton) in wrestleback. Kendle with some good wins - the true frosh Cubberly (Central), a starter in Rendos (Bucknell), and a starter in Young (Indiana) assuming Coughlin doesn't bump up. Pretty deep overall weight if you look into it.
174- Henrich (UVA) wins the weight on injury default over Erwin (Penn State/Graham). The true frosh Bennett (Central) had some very good wins in the main draw, beat a potential DI starter in Kellogg (NW), a national qualifier in Decker (ODU), and then lost by one to Erwin. Roddy (St Edward/Northwestern) finishes top six after a surprising loss, including a win over Decker, before losing to Perry (Indiana).
184- Zac Thomusseit (Pitt/Graham) is in the final down low, pinned someone, beat Foore (EMU/Wadsworth) 9-8, then beat Hiram Smith (Findlay/Willard). Herbert (NW) is in the final up top with three pins. Eric Cameron (Indiana/Moeller) finishes top six. Thomspon (Bucknell/Graham) and Foore one short of placing.
197- Michael Blackwell (Kent/Beachwood) a finalist with good wins over Schoen (NW) and Weakley (Ohio State). Brent Jones (UVA) is the other finalist. Weakley and Andy Zalaskains (Findlay/Massillon) finish top six.
285- Rashard Goff (CSU) is in the final against Nate Everhart (Indiana). Everhart with a pair of 4-1 wins over the heavies Wade (Penn State-Chanel, EMU-Beavercreek). Wade (EMU) placed top six. Bleske (Michigan) knocked off Cameron, and also beat Kuhar (NW/St Edward)

OU got some excellent results in the frosh/soph division but I'm wondering why those guys weren't wrestling in the Open? CSU got nice results from the bookend wt classes--Goff (1st), Keller (6th) and Palivoda (6th). Keller looks like the best CSU recruit in many years. His match with Nick Triggas at Buckeye Duals should be interesting.

Kent is stacked in their upperwts with Kilgore, Cogar and Witt. Their newest recruits, Shuster and Skonieczny, were champs at MSU. This may prove to be the best recruiting class in Kent history.

It has been such a pleasant surprise to see how well Witt has done all the way up at 197. I figured he would do well, but not this early, and not at that high a weight.

Jermaine Lindsey was taken out in an ambulance. I overheard someone saying his hip popped out.

Hank: My notes have Shuster taking third.

Skonieczny, Weinkam, Purdue, Schuth, Kent 197 all won their frosh/soph weights.

One of the more impressive performance at MSU was probably Old Dominion's Ryan Williams at 141. Just what's needed - another talented 141 in DI.

And what about Edinboro's Garrett Scott. He cruised to 149 title at MSU Open, but also won at Buffalo at 141. What weight will he go?

I'm assuming Scott goes wherever Torsten Gillespie isn't. I do remember him being a huge 141 last year though. Also, isn't he ineligible until second semester?

I heard the MRI today shows a groin pull.
