For ten bucks, you can sign up at the Ohio State wrestling website--found on the links page above this post--and get a month of free live web broadcasts of Ohio State athletics. That's not much money to see two wrestling dual meets live. I think it's a great bargain and am thrilled OSU offers this service. I used it last year to watch Ohio State wrestle Iowa, Minny and Edinboro.

There were three really good matches.

1) Chris Tripp v Cody Gardner. Tripp looked determined to show that he wasn't a sacrificial lamb and took some nice shots and scored two early takedowns. Cody settled the match down with his great front head and gained control of the bout. Final was something like 13-7

2) Tyler Savage v Nikko Triggas. Savage looked excellent for most of the first period until taking an ill advised 360 spin shot. I've seen that setup backfire before and it did again. But Savage was on top in the second period and rode Triggas hard with legs. Third period showed Triggas in charge and he took control of the bout with a takedown and tough riding.

3) Johnstone v Straughn. Straughn looked like a D1 AA candidate for two periods but faltered in the third. Indeed, he took the match to Johnstone early and it took great effort on Jason's part to successfully fight off some really nifty stuff off a front head by Straughn. Johnstone, however, got a tight TD call late in the second to tie the bout at 3-3 and then wrestled brilliantly in the third period to break open a tight bout. JJ looks like an AA while Straugh could certainly become an NAIA national champ.

The Falcons were motivated and wrestled the Buckeyes hard. Good match all around at most weight classes. Only 133 (where's Dante Rini?) was a complete mismatch.

My impression on the duals:

tOSU vs. ND
125-Tight match early Triggas did good work on top later. I thought Heskett might actually run out and cradle the official when he did not break a potentially dangerous situation early.
133-Humphrey looked frighteningly quick.
141-Koballa is very good and wrestled J tough to keep it to a decision. Familiarity with one another may have helped Koballa.
149-ff
157-Straughn is tough and pushed Johnstone around early (3-3 going into the 3rd period). Johnstone scored several sets of late backpoints.
165-Superhuman performance by Sponseller.
174-Rella wins a tight one.
184-Bergman is a tough rider.
197-Gardner showed toughness beating a game opponent in Tripp.
285-Cook had a fantastic throw from double overhooks.

tOSU vs. CSU
125-I'm a Triggas fan but it sure looked like Keller had some nearfall points on that pancake. I not saying he would have won b/c I think it would have changed Triggas' approach later.
133- Hump's transition from duck to claw/lift was worth the price of admission.
141-Jaggers had him pinned for approximately 30 early on in a tight cradle. I'm not sure how much more pinned he could have been.
157-Did not see.
165-More of what we've come to expect from Sponseller.
174-Really nice legsweep/throw by Miller. Rella stepped up his attacks later but Miller defended well.
197- I like when Gardner opens up and takes shots. Gardner showed that he is very good with a frontheadlock today as well as being nasy on top.
285-Goff looks like a body builder and is nasty. Cook was overmatched but fought hard to keep it to a major. I would have liked to see Goff vs CoMo as they are both very mobile.

Sponseller set the tone of the meet with an amazing performance. Simply overwhelmed Crenshaw. It was supposed to be a close match, but apparently no one told Colt that. His upcoming exhibition with Moza Fay will tell us if Colt has taken it to the next level. I also thought the "old " Johnstone loses his match against Straugn, but the 2008 version didn't. All his experience of the last 3 years seems to have made him a very very good wrestler. Both he & Cody Gardner showed great resilience in their comeback wins. The camera man next to me said Reece was so quick he couldn't push the trigger fast enough to catch his TD's. This is a "new and improved" Reece Humphrey, and an awful lot of fun to watch. Go Bucs, "second is not the standard"

Jack: Great comments. I agree.

One comment on Rella v Miller. Why didn't Rella just duck the calf to try and finish his single? He kept getting in on his high C but Miller kept blocking him from switching double and locking him in the crotch. Ducking the calf is the perfect antidote to that counter.
