Discussion Topic: NCAA D1 - 149 pounds

Mark:

I have run wrestling tournaments for over 30 years and it actually starts with 5 and 6 year olds. I have seen fathers who have 45# and 50# wrestlers losing 2-3 or 4#; it is insane! How can a child concentrate on learning the techniques he will need. With Ken Jr. I never wanted him losing weight growing up, if he weighed an ounce over we just went up to the next weight class. Many times he would move up weight classes or age groups to get better competition to help him improve.

Next time you see a Dad making his 6 year old cut weight go to your nearest phone and dial 229-7000.

Any dad that has his 5 year old cutting a single ounce cares only about winning vicariously through his child. It's sick.
Glad to read how Ken Ramsey, Sr handled this issue. My educated guess would be that he knows something about our sport.
