Steve: Interesting stuff. One thing I noticed right away when the state draws came out--the number of schools represented was 94. Typically, you see around 100-105. I wonder if this is the new trend?

Ack!! I forgot I had listed Mason twice initially. Editing to 94 and 23 for Fairfield.

Totals have been in the low 90s before. Roughly a little more than half every year, I guess.

Do you see this as a good thing (or at least not a bad thing) or a draw back to the sport? Basically, are you in favor of a little more concentration of talent in one region, thereby raising the talent level of that school and its participants a little more, or would you prefer the qualifiers come from a wide variety of schools?

Mike: My cautious assessment is that less schools producing state qualifiers is an indicator of weakness in more programs. It's no secret that Cuyahoga County has fewer quality programs than in the past. Wrestling results in the newspaper rarely show a dual meet where there aren't several forfeits. Less kids wrestle in high school which means the programs (and level of competition) are weaker.

Interesting, because in my area of PA (SE), though I don't have any real numbers, wrestling seems to be expanding. Local coaches (we're in the same conference as Upper Perkiomen, which has wrestled in the Ironman several years ago) have involved themselves in the development of youth programs in the last 7-10 years that is starting to pay dividends at the HS level.
