Wow, didn't think PA had a chance to win this year. Grajales must be monster - I saw Dane thomas wrestle in the State tourney, and he was tough - but to get pinned. And of course, the worst of it is he's going to TSUN. <banghead>

I think PA always has the motivation advantage in the Dapper Dan. They're wrestling for state pride in front of a home crowd. The USA squad may have tough kids but they come from all over. It's not the same level of motivation. Add in the sheer toughness of PA kids and it's not a surprise that they win this thing from time to time. I didn't like the makeup of this year's USA squad either. Without knowing a thing about the USA team, you had wrestlers from Alabama, Wyoming, Fla, Oregon and NC on this squad. Those aren't hot beds. I know good kids can come from anywhere. But, generally speaking, the best kids outside PA, reside in Ohio, NJ, CA, Illinois, NY and Michigan. Maybe Iowa as well. When you get outside those states, the overall talent level declines substantially. Again, those are generalities. But they often hold true.

I wondered why I didn't see St. John from Iowa City West who is the #1 nationally ranked 160lber or the guy who beat him at the state tourney (ranked #9 nationally). How are the decisions made for who will make up team USA in the Dapper Dan?

some kids turn down invitations, so the guy who is wrestling for either USA or PA may not be the first choice.

AWN doesnt consider Dapper Dan in rankings--- some state tourn have been over for several weeks, the 5 lbs that are given each wrestler, some guys not at their regular wts, and i am skeptical of the weighin process. Has anyone ever been DQed for not making wt ? A great traditional event but not a key factor in rankings, future NCAA champs have lost in the Dapper Dan to a guy not heard from again.

of course invitations to Team USA have to be issued before state tournaments, so if the Dapper Dan had the luxury of waiting then team USA might look different. (PA invitations issued after their state tourn.)
