Discussion Topic: Ohio State Wrestle-off Preview?
Chris Shepherd added to this discussion on October 14, 2007

Admin,
This may be a little early but I was wondering if you were going to put together an OSU wrestleoff preview? We all know the basic players, weight issues, etc. I was just looking for something with a little more depth to read over before the big night. Also, I wasn't sure if there were any major players that may be being overlooked as potential early season starters for the Bucks. Thanks, Shep

We will have an article about it probably a few days before wrestle-offs, which are on October 25 (first night of the Coaches Clinic).

Are they going to have a public wrestle off like last year?

I do believe they will.

Well, at what weights will we have real competition?

Based on past results, here are the matches that would strike me as intriguing. They don't represent the weights at which some of the wrestlers will end up. But based on current roster, these are the ones I'd enjoy seeing.

125: Triggas v Harrington, Touris v Zamaria
133: Enright v Livingston
141: Jaggers v Humphrey
149/157: Palmer v Johnstone
165: Nemec v Sponseller
174/184: Picazo v Pucillo
197: Weinrich v Weakley
285: Bergman v Morrison, Campbell v DiAgosta

125: Triggas v. Harrington - Battle of the Class of 2007: Ohio's best 119 against California's best 119 (arguably on both accounts). Touris v. Zamaria would be a tough battle as well.

133: Enright v. Humphrey - The first match we came to see.

149: Jaggers v. Palmer - It would be cool to have them scrimmage each other knowing it's just an exciting show for the fans. This would not be to get all caught up in the outcome.

157: Johnstone v. Nemec - The second match we came to see.

165: Sponseller v. Bergman - Spoon's first action as a Buckeye versus the rangy veteran Bergman.

184: Pucillo v. Picazo - Like Jaggers versus Palmer, this would be a great match as a show for the fans, and as such, the outcome not mattering.

197: Weinrich v. Weakley - The third match we came to see.

285: Bergman v. Morrison - Could be a fun upperweight match because both are mobile and we could see some throws.

125: Triggas v. Harrington & Touris v. Zamaria
133: Enright v. Humphrey
149: Jaggers v. Palmer ---This will NOT happen. Keep dreaming.
157: Johnstone v. Nemec ---I wouldn't be surprised if this doesn't happen either
165: Sponseller v. Bergman --- No way Bergman gets down to 165.
174: Picazo v. Sanders ---could be intesting. (Closer than the experts think!)
184: Pucillo v. -Dan Cosimi --- Just wanted to see if you were paying attention!
197: Weinrich v. Weakley
285: Bergman v. Morrison

I didn't think that the Jaggers/Palmer and Pucillo/Picazo matches would happen, I'm just saying that's who I'd like to see...

Why wouldn't the Johnstone/Nemec match happen?

Mark,
I'd have to go with Pucillo at 184. Although, with some crafty penmanship, perhaps Cosimi could pull off the upset...Yeah, right! lol

As for the Johnstone/Nemec wrestle-off: I've been in the room quite a bit and am yet to see either one 100%. From the looks of it, Johnstone is working hard in the weight room...perhaps wehere a strain occured. I'm yet to see him on the mat going live. As for Nemec: the forearms seem to "get to him" after a while. He's constantly shaking them out after goes.

But on the other side, neither is going to back down, and could very well be going "light" in order to give us (the fans) a show next Thursday night!

Mark,

Fill us in on how everyone is looking like Triggas, Touris and those guys. Who is getting the best of who there. What are the battles like with Nemec/Sponseller and those guys. Let me know I am very interested in hearing who is doing what.

In all honesty, I rarely see the little guys going live. I'm usually watching the Palmer/Nemec goes and the Pucillo/Anybody goes. Last Saturday I watch Coach Thatcher wrestle live with Weakley...WOW!!! Coach Thatcher is the real deal. If he keeps it up, he'll go places.

Here's something you have to love about Weakley and his outlook on things: Thatcher hit some big moves on him. Two or three times. When the go was over he was visibly upset. The shook hands and he walked off. I'm heading down to the Steelwood facility today to watch the wrestling...I'm betting dollars to doughnuts Weakley calls Coach Thatcher out. (And that is the kind of attitude the Buckeyes are gaining under tNDG!)

Sponseller and Nemec rarley go together. But the Palmer and Nemec goes are PHENOMINAL!!!!!!!!!!! Worth the visit.

One pair I forgot to mention earlier was Livingston/Humphrey. WOW!!! Will "the Thrill" is gaining ground. I say that because I firmly believe either 133pounder will be an AA this year. And "the Thrill" is holding his own.

Guys, if you haven't made it out yet, you have three chances on Saturday's, a Coahces' Clinic and the dual meets to do so. You even have a trip to Minnesota and/or St. Louis if you'd like. Get out and support them.

Is Livingston red-shirting this year?

From what I gather, yes. I have been wrong before though.
