Some highlights on top individuals:

NCAA champ 165 Jarrod King was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA. King transferred to Edinboro two years ago after spending three injury-filled seasons at Oklahoma. The NCAA deemed that King had missed two full seasons due to separate injuries and therefore granted a sixth year.

With King back, there are a whopping 11 individual national champions eligible to compete for this coming season !!!!!!!!

From last season's tournament: Troy Nickerson, Cornell, 125; Franklin Gomez, Michigan State, 133; Darrion Caldwell, North Carolina State, 149; Jordan Burroughs, Nebraska, 157; King, 165; Jake Varner, Iowa State,197 and Mark Ellis, Missouri, heavyweight.

From the 2008 tournament: Angel Escobedo, Indiana, 125; Brent Metcalf, Iowa, 149; Mike Pucillo, 184, Ohio State. And No. 11 is World team member Dustin Schlatter, Minnesota, 149, from 2006.

165 the Weight from Hades !!!!! Schlatter is ticketed to go at 165 pounds after a redshirt year. His presence at 165 turns this weight into a beast. The All-America count stands at ten and led by champs King and Schlatter. 2009 place winners back include runnerup Andrew Howe, Wisconsin, Ryan Morningstar, Iowa (third); Jon Reader, Iowa State (fourth) and Andy Rendos, Bucknell (fifth). Returning from 2008 are No. 1 seed Mack Lewnes, Cornell (fourth); Nick Marable, Missouri (third) Stephen Dwyer, Nebraska (eighth) and Dan Vallimont, Penn State (third at 157 pounds).

Toss in the 2009 No. 6 seed buckeye Colt Sponseller and Hofstra's Ryan Patrovich, and this weight will be hard to crack. And some wonder if Central Michigan's Mike Miller, the NCAA runner-up at 174, will move down after the graduation of starter Trevor Stewart? WOW !

Sponseller btw is 2 & 0 vs the champ King.

WOW. That's all I have to say about 165. There will be some very, very talented guys not standing on the podium next season.

According to the reliable Alan Brown, Mack Lewnes will be at 174. Lewnes was arguably the best 165 this season until he got sick at NCAA's.

Does anyone have some insider info about incoming freshmen or those coming of a introductory redshirt year? Not too many sophomores in the lot up there.

It's going to be a great year, that's for sure. Looking forward to Omaha, Neb.

Dan

I don't see Caldwell in your listing at 149. Is he redshirting and therfeore not included?

Both Caldwell and Bubba Jenkins are reportedly redshirting next season.

There has also been a lot of talk about Jenkins leaving PSU. I don't know why nor if that is accurate.

There were many big timers redshirted last year.

Jordan Oliver - Oklahoma State. Immediately put him in the AA hunt at 133.
Alex Meade - Oklahoma State. Do the same with him at 157.
Jake Deitchler - Minnesota. Don't know if to say he was a redshirt, but he didn't compete collegiately last year. Projects to 157. Should be a solid competitor there.
Tyler Graff - Wisconsin. Projected 133/141. Either way look for him as an AA candidate.
Ben Bennett - Central Michigan. Projected 174/184.
Nate Moore - Iowa. Probably going to be their 125 next year. He's an AA contender sooner rather than later if you ask me, though he's probably up at 133 after this year.
Mario Mason - Minnesota. Projected 149.

This is despite the fact a number of the c/o 2008 were pressed into duty in a true freshman season. Examples:
Jason Welch
Scott Winston
Andrew Howe - national runner-up
Quention Wright - national AA
Jason Chamberlain
Scotti Sentes - national AA

Remember that the c/o 2008 was ungodly strong across the nation!

And, btw, book Dustin Schlatter as a clear favorite for the 2010 NCAA title at 165 pounds!

Just saw on InterMat that Oklahoma State, along with their #1 recruiting class, is getting Mike Benefiel and Albert White. I'm projecting them to have a year similar to Iowa after they waited for Metcalf, Borschel, Slaton, and LeClere to reshirt. Not sayin they will take the whole cake, but they should improve drastically from last season.

As much as I believe that Dustin is the most capable guy at this weight of winning, I've removed phrases like "sure thing," "clear favorite," "never," and "no way" from my vocabulary after watching the NCAA tourney this past season (i.e. Caldwell beating Metcalf).

Oklahoma already had talent with the redshirts coming out, the transfers just make them SICK...oye.

MikeH,
i agree with your comment re Schlatter not a so-called "sure favorite" at 165--- esp after seeing him drift from 1st to 3rd then down to 7th his last 3 seasons at 149.

and i recall seeing some members of this forum claim or imply a few years ago that DS would never lose another match after he won NCAAs as freshman.

I didn't include Caldwell because he will be redshirting for sure. I don't know what is going to happen with Jenkins.

Oklahoma State looks awesome for this year and a few years to come. Jordan Oliver could be every bit as good as Coleman Scott. Jamal Parks is very good. Alex Meade is as explosive as they come.

Penn State is two years away from being the most loaded team in the country. The Pennsylvania high school senior class of 2010 is just insanely loaded... and the grapevine tells me they want to wrestle for Cael.

Iowa is still the team to beat... this year.

Iowa State won't fall on hard times. Kevin Jackson is very good.

Cornell is the best wrestling school of the Ivy League schools and that's always a big draw to top talent.

Kent State is only going to improve... and I'm saying that after a season with two All-Americans, a MAC Dual Championship and a top 20 finish at the national tournament.

All this makes it very difficult for Ohio State. But I know Tom Ryan and the Buckeye staff loves the challenge and will rise to the occasion as they seem to do every year.

And hopefully CSU and OU will be starting to climb back upward. It will be interesting to see what their recruiting classes look like.

I expect to see a lot of unconventional recruits from second-year head coach Ben Stehura at CSU. It appears that he's looking for a certain caliber of character in his recruits. That's admirable and I applaud him for it. But here's the question: do you think he'll have to sacrifice talent? I'm not sure. Jordan Keller was very impressive as a true freshman. Add to that the fact that Stehura couldn't say enough about his good character. I look for big things from his brother, John, too.

Joel Greenlee consistently brings in quality recruits to OU. The problem has been keeping them. If they can keep a whole class together and healthy, they could improve pretty quickly. They do have a very young group. Just based on how much he competes and how far he has come, I think Jake Ison might just be the leader they need. Here's a kid who placed once in the high school state tournament and that was fourth in Division 3 at 145 pounds. Now he's making the World Team Trials at 185 pounds. Now that's one heck of a story!

"And hopefully CSU and OU will be starting to climb back upward."
------------------------------------------------------------

i recall many year ago Woody hayes said the word in the English language he Hated the Most was "hopefully".

i know why too, its a weak word, used when refering to bad situations where people look for a miracle that seldom happens.

i like Joel Greenlee, always have, but both CSU and Ohio U need to show some stuff to get respect back. Both have been down for a while and many people are tired of hearing broken record about what "hopefully" might happen someday-- let's see something and soon.
