Quote from Dave Ressler's post:

"Beachwood High School, 25100 Fairmount Blvd., Beachwood, 44122. I like that the sectional will be held at Beachwood. I hear they have nice facilities and it's close enough.

The question I have is: Why are they counting Richmond Heights (program got dropped), let alone Fairport and Fuchs Mizrachi (who have never had programs)? I thought the number to be considered a "team" was seven competitors. Richmond Heights entered four in the sectional last year and Fairport and Fuchs Mizrachi combined have had zero. This does a disservice to the district because it's not balancing the strength of the sectionals.

Here is my understanding of process:

The "team" count is for purposes of determining how many "sectionals" each district gets.

Every "school" that has/will have wrestling is counted - I think - for splitting up sectionals. You will see that at least the Beachwood and Brooklyn sectionals have some schools that never had wrestling (Lake Ridge comes to mind over at Brooklyn).

Someone also needs their heads examined in DI - Look at that Medina sectional. It will end up either eating up that Perry District and/or you'll have some state caliber kids staying home at Medina.

Josh--similar problem existed for several years at the Garfield Heights sectional in the early to mid 1990's. Walsh(winning national titles), Solon (at their best), Maple (at their best), Garfield (at their best), Cleveland Heights (one of the top dual teams in city at that time), Ignatius, Shaker, Cuyahoga. Falls....
It was crazy. There'd always be a few poor Cleve. Schools that would be lucky to win a match. 42% of the qualifiers from this district made it to state over a 5 year period. Great kids failed to get out every year. I tell this story repeatedly but soph Josh Greenspan, who had placed at Brecksville, and jr. Kevin Welsh, who was runnerup at Medina, both failed to get out at 145 lbs. Maple's Randy Deubel also got put out at the same weight class. All three wrestlers had great records coming in to the sectional. The following year, Deubel was a SQ, Greenspan was a state placer and Welsh was champ and Sr nationals champ.l

It shouldn't be difficult to do this...
- Tally up the returning district points for each team.
- Take the Top 16 at each district and make sure 4 teams in the Top 16 are at each of the 4 sectionals.
- Try to split up the Top 16 so that each sectional is relatively equal.
- Have all the rest of the teams go to the closest available sectional.

For Example...
Sectional 1: #1, #8, #9, #16
Sectional 2: #2, #7, #10, #15
Sectional 3: #3, #6, #11, #14
Sectional 4: #4, #5, #12, #13
*34 = optimal strength number for each sectional

Obviously because of distance concerns it won't be exactly like that, but there's no reason why it couldn't be as close to it as possible.

Right now it is similar to this at Maple Heights...
Beachwood: #7, #14, #15 (Strength = 15)
Brooklyn: #2, #3, #10, #16 (Strength = 37)
Rootstown: #4, #5, #11, #13 (Strength = 36)
Northwestern: #1, #6, #8, #9, #12 (Strength = 49)

Hank-
That is a staggering number, especially given being in an era when Mentor was taking three for many of those years.
If you look at DI, there's still a big stilt - now though it's at Medina. Then again, that does reflect some of the demographic changes in NE Ohio over the last 10-plus years. Strongsville, Brecksville, Barberton, Wadsworth, and Kenmore all in the same sectional - plus a solid Medina team.

All this shows is that there's a need for some sort of "super-districting" like they do in Central and Southwest Ohio. Of course, this is an issue in many sports.
