EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior Robbie Michaels won the 165 pound division at the Michigan State Open on Saturday (Nov. 13), highlighting the Vikings performance at their second open competition of the season.

This is the second straight week Michaels has won the 165 class at an open, as he went 4-0 in taking the crown at the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday, Nov. 6.

"Robbie Michaels had another great day of wrestling," head coach Ben Stehura said. "He looked very good, especially with it still being early in the year, and he's only going to get better as the season continues."

Michaels went 4-0 again on Saturday, beginning the day with an 8-3 decision against Indiana's Ross Powell. He then defeated Nick Hendrick of Eastern Michigan (6-3) and Michael Lybarger of Findlay before beating Bucknell's Corey Lear, 11-4, in the championship match.

Zach Zupancic (wrestling at 125), Nick Flannery (133), Lawrence Cavello (149), Corey Carlo (165) and Aric Thurn (174) also won matches at the Michigan State Open.

"We made some good adjustments today," Stehura said. "All of our guys showed improvement from last week. We're just going to keep working hard and preparing for the season, but I like where we're at right now."

Up next for the Vikings is their first dual meet of the season, at John Carroll on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 7:00 p.m.
