Discussion Topic: Toughest Wrestling Class In Ohio?
Anthony Windsor II added to this discussion on November 25, 2007

Most people agree that David Taylor is the best wrestler in Ohio pound for pound...

But which of the 14 weight classes in Ohio is the toughest?

Is it the 103, 112, and 119 weight classes where a large number of our topped ranked wrestlers are?

Or is it it the other weight classes where the upperclassmen normally dominate?

It depends on the year and the division. Division 2 had two of the toughest weight classes in recent memory - 171 in 2003 (Hahn won over Knapp, Hackett, Dennis, Schutte, etc.) and 119 in 2002 (Zupancic won, Doggett and Deubel didn't place).

This year I'm not sure, we have to see where everyone ends up.

i would say that last year the Jameson, Clopton, Habat, etc. wt.class was one of the best in awhile.

I think DII, 171 from a few years ago and DII 119 from '02 that was mentioned above are two of the toughest all time. Some others to consider:

1988, Division I, 152 Lbs.
Joe Collins, Robert Taylor, Aaron Schetter, Marvin Gilmore, Bill Splete and Chris Corso.

1985, AAA, 138 Lbs
Monty Dagley, Dan St. John, Brian Dolph, Mike Carpenter and Bill Smith.

Talking this season, it is too early to tell, however DIII 119 may possibly be the weight if all the players that could be there, are there.

Logan Stieber - 2007 State Champ, 2x Cadet National Champ
Ben Sergent - 2007 State Champ, Junior National Champ, 2x Junior All-American
Troy Opfer - 3x State Placer, 2007 State Runner-Up
As well as 7 other returning state placers from 112 and 119 in 2007 including Zack Pope, Greg Marmaros, Alex Lopez, Andrew Clark, Travis Wooten, Jordan Karnes, and Matt Mascioli. Not all of these guys will be 119 if they can avoid it, but if the top 3 guys are, then that will be worth the price of admission.
