Here's a recap from the Findlay newspaper. Note that Tony Guerra beat Iowa's tough Ryan Morningstar and went 4-0 in his matches.

LAKEWOOD — After a tough weekend quadrangular, the University of Findlay wrestling team is off to a 2-2 start.

Two-time returning NCAA Division II national champion Tony Guerra posted a 4-0 record as the Roughnecks dropped decisions to Division I foes Iowa (40-3) and Old Dominion (34-5) while beating Iowa Central (30-18) and North Carolina State (22-20) at the St. Edward High School Quad on Saturday.

Guerra scored the only win for Findlay against the Hawkeyes, the No.4 team in the latest Division I rankings, when he knocked off returning NCAA qualifier Ryan Morningstar 5-4 at 157 pounds.

Guerra and Travis Clark picked up victories in the loss to No.22-ranked Old Dominion. Guerra stopped Dan Rivera 8-4 while Clark stopped Roy Dragon II 9-4 at 285 pounds.

The Roughnecks trailed Iowa Central, the two-time defending junior college national champs, before winning four straight matches in the heaviest weights.

With the match tied 18-18, Dan Stevenson stuck Joe Johnson in 3:59 at 197 pounds and Clark flattened Matt Sixta to give the Roughnecks their first win.

Former area prep standouts helped UF edge the Wolfpack, the defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion as Bluffton High School graduates Josh Falk and Justin Shannon picked up their first wins of the season.

Falk pinned Joe Carmanica in 6:28 at 141 pounds, while Shannon stopped William Gilleland 10-4 in the 165-pound division.

Clark sealed the win at heavyweight when he whipped Bobby Isola 16-6. The Roughnecks, the No.16 team in the latest Division II national rankings, will travel to Cumberland, Tenn. for a quadrangular match that will include Limestone (S.C.) and Carson-Newman (Tenn.) next Sunday.

Overall, excellent day for Findlay. Beating the two-time defending NJCAA champs and the defending ACC champs in the same day is outstanding.

Antonio Guerra is awesome. Beating a guy like Morningstar shows that Guerra would be a force at any level. Great key pin by Josh Falk in the North Carolina State match over Joe Caramanica.

Shawn Nelson is doing a great job with these guys.

I was impressed by Travis Clark. I could see why he's rated number 2 at 285 in division 2 (at least in one ranking set). He gave Fields a good battle and Fields was really tough all day.

Guerra = solid. Good position, well executed TDs. Good on the mat, though Morninstar did get 3 points on a 5 count where there was no danger of a pin. Guerra beat him from nuetral.

Falk got a little lucky against Caramanica, but, hey, he took advantage of the opening.

Young team too. <thumbsup>

I was very impressed at how Findlay looked in NW Ohio to get some nice recruits this past off-season. Wrestlers from Galion, Bluffton, Rossford, and Eastwood. It's always nice to be able to do that to build a solid local fan base. It's even better when those wrestlers are of the quality that they are. I am working to try and set up a night that my wrestlers can go and watch a meet at Findlay. Great program!
