Grafton Midview
Mentor
North Jackson Jackson-Milton
North Olmsted
Norton
Pepper Pike Orange

Shaker Heights
Solon
Strongsville
Twinsburg

Jackson-Milton should have a few contenders. Joe Skaggs should have a real good chance of winning it at 145 or 152 (not sure which one he is at.) He was 2nd to Hardy last year. Vinny Pizzuto is a tough fr at 103 who placed at the jrhsc last year and is ranked 9th. Santino Pizzuto should fare well too at 112 as he is also in the preseason rankings. I believe Mascioli will be taking his act so he will not be wrestling this weekend. The Jays also have Alex Tomaino 125/130 who was a jrhsc state placer last year and is ranked this year, and they also have Dan Clawson who took a 4th at last years comet classic @215 and is ranked as well.

If anyone knows anything else about the other schools, go ahead and spill your guts. Go Bluejays!

Shaker has a solid 215, Roman Lawson. He was a sectional champ last season and had some district wins. Lawson is a very good football player as well.

The Solon Comet Classic is always a very good tournament.

Mentor, the defending champions, lost a lot to graduation last year but they always have a solid lineup. They'll probably win here again but it will be way closer than last year. John Harasyn (right off of the state finalist football team), Dave Jindra, and the coach's son, Mike Skilton, will lead the Cardinals.

Kenmore has a few excellent wrestlers in Sheppard and Chapman and they should do very well here. Solon and Strongsville always have very tough squads. As Nick said, Jackson-Milton will be very tough and state finalist Skaggs and two-time state placer Mascioli, shoud lead the Blue Jays to a top-tier finish.

Beachwood, Berkshire, and North lost a bunch to graduation and transfers. Two-time state placer Porter and state qualifier Thoreson will score big for Berkshire, as will two-time state placer Marmaros for Beachwood, and D1 state qualifier Bencivenni for North.

Solon was the first HS tourney I won wrestling for Norton at 285 in 96' my soph. year. Then there was a ton a awesome guys there. Lynch from Holy Name and Wrobel from Chanel stand out in my mind. Lynch tore through the 215lb bracket like it was nothing. Solon is a great tournament to begin the season! Good wrestling and a great exposure for younger guys.

Ed: Great to see at least one team from the City Series making a good showing. Keep up the good work. Saw some of your wreestlers last year at sectionals and they did a nice job. Looking for big things at Solon. Good luck.

I am sad to report that along with the 2 missing starters due to the ACT testing, and 1 to injury. That we will now be forfieting 5 weight classes. 171 Hatcher and 140 Sheppard are out due to being sick. Our "B" team also has a match this weekend a tri or a quad don't remember.

I due like the draw our remaining guns got. Lamberg and McCormack will both have to go through the number 2 seed to hopefully see the number one seed in the Finals. Look for the 2 Sophmores to make a mark.

Chapman and May have favorable draws also should allow them to advance. Look for both of them to wrestle with something to prove!

Finally J. Sheppard going unseeded is just what the Freshman needs, we will soon see where he stands in high school.

I watched a lot of wrestling this weekend. I have a very bad taste in my mouth though from a very big tournament error!!! Friday the brackets and bout numbers were changed 4 times. At @ 11 pm our 160 Drayson Davis Checked his bracket and he was done for the day along with coach check the latest bracket he had from the head table, the conclusion was Davis was done for the night. With about a hour drive home Davis left, 15 minutes later he was called to a mat. He FF the match and thus was done in the tournament. Coach appealed to no avail and again in the morning to me that was just not right!!!!
With that said Saturday was very well ran and the 1st place awards were the best I have seen from any tournament I have ever been to!!

Results for the tournament for our guys:
103 Mike Roberts 2 and out
125 Isaiah Chapman First place was very good showing
130 Garland McCormick First place wrestling with more confidence than ever before
135 Erik May Sr Runner up lost a tough match to a good Mike Mencini (Twinsburg)
152 Andre Wright 2 and out
160 Dryason Davis Lost first round Robbed out of a chance to place!!!
189 Cody Lamberg First place 3 pins and a 12-5 decision
215 Dusty Newberry Lost to Poptart Porter in the first round Came screaming back to place 5th

Notes from the tournament
189 Lamberg (Kenmore) dominated a field with 2 state qualifiers and a good kid from PA. Looked very rough on his feet compared to this summer (he may be out a week or so) pulled/dislocated/separated a rib half way through the semi final with Dominic Jontony (Strongsville) who in my opinion was the second best wrestler in this weight class. I think some had him at 171 after watching Joe Stewart (Strongsville) at 171 I think he might be stuck at 189.
171 Joe Stewart (Strongsville) ran away with 171 with 3 pins and a dec very well rounded should do well come March
Derry team wrestled with a very strong freestyle influence very good mat wrestlers
130 McCormick (Kenmore) wrestled with a ton of confidence in the final. Only close match was with Kostandaras (Revere) who I think will be back at 125
125 Chapman (Kenmore) Wrestled very safe getting to the finals and opened thing up a little should have won by larger margin was robbed of back points in the final. Shaffer was a very well rounded kid lost to Chapman in the semis but match could have went the other way.
145 Final featured 2 Fathers coaching their sons. An ot win by Pierce (Poland) over Leonard (Norton) in a defensive battle. That matchup could easily have gone the other way. Jamar Sheppard (Kenmore found out how hard it is to beat the same guy twice losing a heartbreaker 5-4 to Evan Schreiner (Mentor) in the final moments but I think it is a lesson well learned and a mistake that won’t be made again.
135 Mike Mencini (Twinsburg) Pins May (Kenmore) in the final after controlling the match, If I am not mistaken he had a 20 sec pin also very aggressive
285 Mike McCarthy (Strongsville) vs Mike McElligott (Chanel) Reminded me of Sharp vs Walker from last year McCarthy almost lost this match after stopping before the 3rd overtime was over after getting the go-ahead escape.

Ed,

Please understand that I have been going to this tournament for 6 years and what happened Friday is the first time something like that has occurred. There is no tournament more intuned and concerned with what their guests want. It won't happen again. Your team is a welcome addition to any tournament. I hope you will return.

Joe Skaggs looked really good this weekend. He won the most pins in the quickest time. Congrats to the three Bluejays that placed this weekend who are, Vince Pizzuto 5th @103, Santino Pizzuto 3rd @112, and Joe Skaggs 1st @152.
