Before the match (you know which one im talking about), the consensus seemed to be that Roddy would be able to wear down Phillips with his conditioning and strength. Phillips had seemed to gas in his match with Deciantis, and looked a little bit tired in another, I don't remember which.
Phillips has strength, and a lot of it. Roddy locked up several shots in their match, but Phillips kept his hips square and used an awesome sprawl. You don't fend off shots in that position from Brian Roddy without having a very strong lower back and legs (hamstrings and glutes mostly). Roddy seemed to try to lock up a single and bullrush Phillips, but Phillips stayed square to him and used that great sprawl.
Also, offensively, Phillips is so smooth. He has great reshots and counters, and flows so quickly and smoothly from shot to finish to looking for backs (the last part he didn't show in the Roddy match, mostly because I don't think anybody in high school is going to put Roddy on his back, but did earlier in the tournament).
