Phillips has lived up to the hype and then some. No one thought he could beat Roddy but the way he just took him down I still am having trouble grasping the talent of this kid.

Don't get me wrong, Chris Phillips is awesome, but let's not call him the second coming just yet. Luke Fickell came in with a lot of hype, beat some tough competition, and didn't make it to states, right? Let's see what Chris can keep putting out this season.

Nicholas Sestito...You'd have to look pretty hard to find a bigger Fickell fan then me, but a comparison between these two at this stage is a landslide for Phillips. Fickell, while clearly excellent as a freshman did lose to eventual DI champ Randleman early in the year. And while we all think of the Kevin Randleman at tOSU, he was not that in high school (a 1X state champ, by some VERY suspect calls against Bill Splete). Also, no national credentials to speak of.

Brian Roddy is Wrestling USA's #1 ranked 171-pound all class . Corey Peltier is number eight. He didn't just beat both these guys, he dominated them, neither coming close to an offensive point aginst him.

Is it possible that he has a slip up like Fickell did his freshman year? Sure, but very unlikely. Also, with "no follow your man" brackets at Districts, even a loss won't cause him to fail to qualify. This kid's a four timer, period.

Who do you guys like in a matchup between Welch and Phillips?

Well I like to be cautious before I make prophetic statements about such a young wrestler, but he's a super-talent for sure. Even then I should have clarified myself, I meant he could be a 4-timer, but not necessarily undefeated. I'm sure he could win it 4 times in D3 and even cross class, but every wrestler can have a bad day. Both Schlatters won out their freshmen year only to lose in their sohomore years, it happens to the best. Besides losing isn't always a bad thing, it can reveal weaknesses which can be improved upon to prepare for the next level, college in this case.

Quote from Michael Rodriguez's post:

Roddy came very close to getting some takedowns. Phillips just always found a way to get out of bounds or out of the takedown when Roddy was close to it. When you see the video you'll see what I'm talking about.

With how good he is, no, I do not think it is possible that he slips up. Roddy is at least a major decision better than anyone Phillips will face the rest of the year. There will be no losses. In fact, there won't be anyone close to beating him. The only thing that can stop Phillips from being Ohio's first undefeated four-time state champion is an injury.

The only wrestler in Ohio that can defeat Chris Phillips is Brian Roddy, period. And tonight, he didn't. He will be a four-time undefeated state champion. Cross-class he could be too, with his only chance of a "slip-up" being against Roddy in the title match.

Quote from Scott Nicola's post:

I don't know. Welch is at 160, Phillips is at 171. Welch is not as strong as Roddy but he's more technical and has more funk, which might stifle Phillips. Quentin Wright (who just won the Penn State Open over Marcus Effner, Michael Chaires, David Rella, and Mack Lewnes) will now be #1 in the nation at 171 with Chris Phillips being, probably, #2 or #3 along with Fargo finalist Cody Yohn.

While all the hype has lived up for Phillips being as good as he is and then some. Hunter Stieber has the inside track to go undefeated for his high school career. He will only get better with his brother and Tessari in the room. I think Logan Stieber will only have 1 loss in his career.

The magnitude of this match is unreal. Phillips is by far the best wrestler I have ever seen at the high school level. He just knocked off the defending state champion at 171 who is the #1 ranked wrestler in the nation too. Phillips just has the it factor about him with the technique which is flawless. He was not once ever out of position during that match and kept Roddy flustered the whole time.

The video up on flo is just amazing to watch, how good Phillips really is.
