Discussion Topic: Fun Video in the Olympic Spirit
Mark Hawald added to this discussion on July 26, 2012

With the Olympics coming up, I thought this would be a cool thing to share. It is a video from 1983 about my dad (also Mark Hawald) training for the 1984 Olympics. The whole thing is 8 minutes long, so check it out if you have the time.

Clevelanders should remember the program PM Magazine. Anyone 30 or older should remember the music, the hair, and the clothes.

PM Magazine featured Michael Stanley and Jan Jones. My stepdad used to be on a lot. He was referred to as "the meat man" and he'd talk about cuts of beef.

WOW! Does that take you back or what? PM magazine, Rocky style training, and I swear Randy Simpson drove that exact Nova when I was in college.

Good stuff. Thanks for sharing!

He was 3rd, 1st, 1st in D3. In 1975 he was 2-2 at D1s. In 1976 he took 5th at D1s. All at 134 lbs. In 1976 Pat Milkovich (Maple Heights) was 2nd and Sam Komar (West Geauga) was 4th at 134. So you had 3 northeast Ohio wretlers as All-Americans in the same bracket, back when they only placed top 6.

I don't know if or what he placed at the trials. I'm not sure if they had a consolation bracket then. I am pretty sure he lost in the round of 8 or 16. The weight was 62kg/136.5lbs. Randy Lewis won the gold at the weight class.

Today, he helps me coaching, but full-time he is a financial planner.

very interesting-- i wish D3 was still allowed in NCAA D1 tourn, would make things even more exciting.

3 ohio guys placing in D1 PatM, Komar, your dad in 1976, reminds me of 1981-- DeAnna 2nd, Jamie Milkovich beat Steve Reedy for 5th at 167 pounds.

anyone recall other NCAA D1 wts with 3 ohio wrestlers ??

Jim Weir is the only other wrestler from John Carroll to become a divsion I All-American.

I agree it would add excitement to allow the DII and DIII champion to again compete in the NCAA DI championships. We love our underdog stories...

Fyi, I spent the summer in London after my junior year at John Caroll working for a brokerage company. Jim Weir met me and took me out to lunch. Between us... I had a bit of a man crush.

A famous one was 3 Eds wrestlers placing in the same weight class. Bertin, Maynard, and Nakamura?

Well since no one else has asked the obvious, I guess its up to me. Were you the chubby kid in the red shorts or the younger kid in the blue overalls?

BTW- Videos like this that show the commitment and training athletes go through are the reason a tear comes to my eye everytime I see the medal ceremonies. There are thousands like your dad who gave everything. In my eyes, the medal ceremony recognizes them too.

don't know that this note fits here but its worth mentioning somewhere on this forum -- --

Dan Gable just inducted in FILA Wrestling H of F, noteworthy in that only 7 Americans have been inducted, very exclusive club.

Gable joins six previous FILA Hall of Fame inductees from the United States, including freestyle wrestlers John Smith, Bruce Baumgartner, Kevin Jackson and LEE KEMP, women’s freestyle wrestler Tricia Saunders and Olympic referee Dr. Vince Zuaro.
