Discussion Topic: Casey Finnicum commits to Ohio State
Dan Cosimi added to this discussion on January 21, 2008

Casey Finnicum, a senior at Mountlake Terrace High School in Washington, committed to wrestle at The Ohio State University. Finnicum was a state champion last year at 171 pounds after finishing seventh in the state as a junior and sixth as a freshman. Unfortunately he suffered a season-ending ankle injury at the beginning of the year and will not be able to compete this year. He will join the Buckeyes and coach Tom Ryan as a 174 or 184 pounder.

Here's an article and photo about him: http://www.enterprisenewspapers.com/article/20071228/ETP26/342128487

Dan,
If he is out this year and was state champ last season, did you mean he was 7th as a soph. and 6th as a freshman? I thought in some states they get an extra year, do they in Washington?

Yep, it was a typo. I meant to say he got seventh as a sophomore.

Quote from Cliff Cahill's post:

You're correct. He recently defeated Lex Luger for the WWE championship.

Lex Luger isn't among the scores of professional wrestlers who have died young, but steroids, painkillers and alcohol brought him to the brink.

Hank your reference was a match when your man Lex was dry or hy?

Finnicum is pretty good, but Ohio State is still after a big fish for that 174 class.

"CASEY FINNICUM
Mountlake Terrace, Junior

A team captain and an all-state honorable mention academically, Finnicum went 34-2 at 171-pounds. An All-Wesco wrestler, he finished third at the Pac Coast Championships, second at the Bonney Lake Invite and first at the Paul Reiman and Edmonds Invites, districts, regionals and the 4A state championships. Self-motivated with a personal goal to improve as the season progressed, Finnicum says he's lucky to have several solid coaches to help him be his best. "My girlfriend, friends and teammates have all been real supportive," he said. "I'm lucky to have parents who care and come to watch me perform. They all motivate me to work my hardest.""

"The large Finnicum contingent was rewarded for its devotion to him throughout the season when he won a 5-0 decision over Mountain View's Jake Connor in the Feb. 17 finals. The title was the first for a Mountlake Terrace wrestler in 22 years.

The support Finnicum (34-2) received made a difference.

"My dad, my family, everyone, they've always been there at every single tournament and helped me along," Finnicum said. "It feels great. It's everything I've been working for."

Finnicum, who finished seventh and sixth at state the last two years, came into the tournament as the favorite among the 171-pounders. But friend Reese Cogdill told Finnicum not to pay any attention to the rankings or message boards and to simply focus on wrestling."

"Ankle injury sidelines Casey Finnicum
Mountlake Terrace state champ is out for the season
Posted at 4:13 pm by Mike Cane, Herald Writer

One local state wrestling champion won’t be defending his title this year.

Casey Finnicum, a senior at Mountlake Terrace High School, will miss the rest of the season because of an ankle injury. Finnicum, a three-time state-tournament qualifier, won the Class 4A 171-pound state championship last year"

""I'm done for the season," said Finnicum, after attending the Lynnwood Classic invitational on Dec. 15 at Lynnwood High School.

The Mountlake Terrace senior, who did not wrestle in the tournament, broke his left ankle during a football scrimmage last June. A CAT scan on Dec. 14 indicated that further surgery would be necessary to correct the problem.

Finnicum still has plans to continue wrestling in college, most likely at Cal State Fullerton."

Cliff--I was just having fun with your statement that he must very good to have passed up all those programs between Ohio and Washington. I didn't really know much about Lex Luger.

I do think he's a fine pickup for the Bucks as they badly need to find wrestlers for 174/184. I also am heartened by Bob P's comment that the Bucks aren't done looking.
