Discussion Topic: Guess Who's Going To State?
Hank Kornblut added to this discussion on April 7, 2014

My daughter, Hannah, an 8th grader at Shaker Middle School, for Power of the Pen. She had to try out just to make the team. Then she went to an essay competition at Akron St V's where top 20% qualified for regionals. She finished in top 20% along with two other girls from her team. Next was the Regional competition at Kent State with the top 15% qualifying for state.

Just found out today that she and her two teammates made it.

Excuse the bragging. A loudmouth like me can't resist.

Congratulations! That's awesome! No need to apologize, bragging about one's kids is always acceptable.

Congrats to your daughter, Hank!

I went to state in Power of the Pen a long time ago where I did not do very well. I remember that the grader did not like my essay because the events took place in a dream. So my only advice is to tell your daughter not to have her essay take place in a dream.

Oh, and tell her to have fun!

I narrowly missed making state in Power of the Pen in 1999. That means that your daughter is smarter than I. Congrats to her on that feat . My sister made it and did fairly well.

Hank -- that's fantastic. What's involved in this competition? I've never heard of it before, but I teach math so it's not that surprising.

It is a creating writing competition. You are given a broad theme and x amount of time (I don't remember how much- maybe 20 minutes. There are three rounds, and your scores are aggregated.

Congrats to you and Hannah, Hank!

Doesn't happen for another month. And you have no idea how you did until a couple of weeks after the competition is over.
