I'm thinking a photo shop into the photo of the three stars in hooded sweatshirts... "Fred Feeney: 4th Horseman of Team Foxcatcher" (in purple background). : )

Am I being nostalgic or did it seem like wrestling in that era was technical, but fierce and raw?
When I think of wrestling now (which I love, don't get me wrong) I think of words like "sophisticated", "prodigies", "calculating"...

I'm not sold that it was as technical, but it was certainly brutal. Mark Schultz! Who in this era resembles him? Certainly not D.T., Ed Ruth, or JO. Even Logan Stiebler has a high level of finesse (although his arm bar series seems detrimental).
Metcalf? ...no. He has a left handed high crotch. Can't be him.

This is true. They did this in order to be eligible for an Oscar.
Some time in January, the movie will be released to the masses (demanding public)!

Hmmm, looks like a trip to a certain sandwich shop, in Cleveland Heights, and a movie will be in order.

I'll be rolling to the Esquire 6 with the oldest son; ironically he is not a wrestler but loves Indie type films with actors playing out of character (i.e. Carrell).
Should be a good outing. : )

It has progressed and evolved, as any skilled endeavor or art form will naturally do. If by "raw" you mean that wrestlers back then could be sloppy with their position and still succeed based on quickness and strength, absolutely. Not being sound with your position is fatal in wrestling today. Kids are getting better training by better coaches at younger ages than ever before. It's a minefield for any wrestler out there today, more so than at any other time in history.
