Discussion Topic: Northern Iowa - intriguing program

N. Iowa feels like a sleeping giant to me, perhaps already waking up.

Thoughts:

1. Doug Schwab is developing talent. I reviewed recruiting ranking from the last several years and they had very few top recruits, yet finished 15th at the NCAAs last season.

2. Moving to the MAC was a huge upgrade. They now get to compete against Mizzou, CMU, Kent, ODU, and OU. Solid competition that will lead to a bunch of bids.

3. They have one of the best home mat environments in the sport. Wrestling is important in that community.

4. Schwab off to a big recruiting season already for 2015, getting commitments from the number 32 and 60 commits on InterMat.

5. They exist in a talent-rich state/region.

This could be a top 5 program starting, well, soon.

Doug Schwab has been ridiculously effective since taking over the Panthers. It just goes to show what can happen when you hire the right coach. I think top five can happen occasionally for the Panthers; more likely, they'll challenge yearly for the MAC title and produce 1-3 AA's per year. Those are great accomplishments.

Also contributing to their future success will be the presence of post-grad guys training there. I remember an interview with Joe Colon where he said he was sticking around to coach and compete at the senior level.

UNI's dual record last year was 13-0, with a 7-0 record in the MAC.

Sounds like he has the program headed right where he wants it.
