Discussion Topic: "I was a State..." *Sigh*
Justin Hayes added to this discussion on November 26, 2014

This happens to me at least once per year.

Holding true in the 11th hour of 2014, it occurred today...

I strike up a conversation with someone and find out they wrestled.

Invariably, they tell me, "I was a State... (usually Qualifier or Champion).

I get online, verify that they were NOT a State (Qualifier or Champion).

*Sigh*

This isn't fishing or hunting where it is socially acceptable to fudge a bit or where the facts can't be verified; we can have a fraternal connection through the common bond of wrestling experience, without regard to credentials.

I'm surprised Niemann tells people that.... :-D

I had a patient boasting to me about how he was a state champion from a certain school on such and such a year. I knew whom the state champ was that year, in the class, in that division.

"So, you wrestled so & so in the state finals then?"
"Yea, I guess. I don't remember who the guy was."

I remember every kid I beat in the finals of every tournament I ever wrestled. Now granted, I have a very good memory, but come on... What state champ doesn't remember whom he beat in the state finals?

Tru dat.

Twice now I've heard the "I lost in the State Finals because I got injured..." narrative. Checked online and, lo and behold, he wasn't IN the "State Finals".

I've heard the "I was one point away from making it to State my Senior year..." account on numerous occasions.

I didn't know you knew Uncle Rico.
I do the same thing when someone tells me of their wrestling credentials. I do however take Mark Niemann at his word that he was a 4x Sectional Qualifier.

4x sectional qualifier

I had a guy once tell me, after we talked about how he graduated around the time of me, and the dual meets our team would have with his (same conference). He'd stop up from time to time (once every few weeks) in our room just to hang out a bit and talk wrestling.

One day we got to talking about some of the true studs from our area. He proceeds to tell me that he - a D-I guy - wrestled AND HAD A KNOCKDOWN, DRAG OUT WAR WITH ...wait for it... Ross Thatcher - at the State tournament!!!

Now, aside from the fact that Ross didn't have many close matches with anybody in high school, it would have been impossible for him - a D-III guy - to take on anyone in D-I at the state tournament.

Buh.

First off, Niemann is fudging his credentials as a 4x sectional qualifier just a bit...in a way that is unique and very Niemannesque.

I had a guy on my college team that did the very same thing....he swore he was a SQ for four years when we knew he wasn't. It was bizarre. We were all wrestling mat rats....this was a college team...and he never let go of it.

I never went to the state tournament. Saying I went won't change it.

About five years ago my (then) girlfriend and I went to Philadelphia for the wedding of her niece.

We spent one night having dinner at her niece's mother in-law's house. The mother in-law was dating a guy that seemed to have had an interesting life.

Somehow the subject of wrestling came up, and he casually mentioned that he had wrestled for Lehigh.

How did you do?

I was an All-American.

Something didn't seem quite right, and I later went to www.wrestlingstats.com to prove or disprove his assertion.

No mention of his name.

My girlfriend was not too excited over my lack of trust, which is one of the reasons she has been my ex-girlfriend since 2012.

I was a District Runner-up my senior year, but losing at Regionals ended my quest.

On the opposite end of the conversation, someone at work told me about another guy there who had been a really good wrestler. So I talked to him and he said he had wrestled for Hiram, and had done pretty well. I looked him up, and he had been two-time All American, finishing third one year!

Truth!

The handful of thunderstuds in this type of scenario I've run into over the years have consistently downplayed/been vague about their accomplishments.

Justin Hayes: I true badass never says a word about it! Once the mouth opens on such a topic...it probably ain't true ;-) But, you can tell by the way he/she talks and by their actions their badassed nature.

I probably would have been a 4 time state champ, except for the refs! ;)

I've met a lot of young men who wrestled for Shaker when I was coaching. None of them look familiar. But I always say, "Sure I remember you."
