Urban Meyer is going to be an honorary coach on Sunday. He should get a big ovation. The OSU website still has Hunter & Bo as possible starters. I watched Iowa/Rutgers meet tonight, OSU will need all the starters to win on Sunday. BTW Andrew Campolattano made his Rutgers debut with a win over the Iowa 2nd stringer.

"I would feel better about the dual if Hunter & Bo hadn't gotten injured early in the year. But again, March is what counts. But winning these matches helps get a better seed come March."
|
In college football, all games have meaning. Ohio State managed to dodge a bullet in their early season loss to Virginia Tech by clobbering Wisconsin 59-0. Otherwise, they're not in the mix for the title.
If wrestling duals are meaningless, what does that say about college wrestling? It says forfeits, holding guys back so they can be strong for March, and it says that the regular season has no meaning beyond getting a better seeding for the conference tourney.
That's a poor design.
In wrestling, if you win a dual, you puff out your chest. If you lose...so what?
In football, if you lose once, well, you better not lose again for the rest of the year.
Unless, of course, you have no designs on a national title.

I agree, whenever I read comments from fans when their team loses, it's almost always ended with "but what counts is being good in March".
I'm not sure football is a good comparison though. If only 4 teams had a chance at the title based on ranking I'm sure duals would be more important. Basketball is more comparable, and you see that losing isn't as critical during the season as long as they make the big dance.

Several quick notes following last night's Iowa-Rutgers match:
1) BTN commentator Johnson said "We're seeing a great match here tonight" to which Gibbons responded "No shit." (Seriously, I replayed it like three times.)
2) Gilmer at 125 looks tough/had a dominating performance. But I found myself shaking my head a bit at his post-match interview wherein he was asked about his approaching match with Tomasello, and said there was no love lost between the two, and in fact he "hated" him. I know Iowa does not have a monopoly on this, but I've seen its coaches and wrestlers interviewed a # of times over the years and come across as absolute a**hats. Contrast this with how OSU's coaches and athletes (e.g., the Stieber bros, Dijulius, et al.) present themselves, and it really makes me appreciate what we have going here.
3) Saw at least 3 porn-star staches going on, in addition to Evans'. Not certain what started this trend, but can't say I'm a fan.
4) Attendance was announced at 5400-plus, which was great to see. But let's hope we crush that tomorrow.
Go Bucks!!

I thought I heard Gibbons say that, but I had no replay. I just tried to figure out what word could have rhymed with "shit" that he might have said that I didn't hear correctly??? I also noticed Coach Goodale telling the refs about the Iowa shoving after going out of bounds. Same old Iowa. Ya know, some of the stuff Iowa and their coaches do is so classless. And Gilmans remarks remind me of Tony Ramos, he couldn't just respect you as a fellow competitor & wrestle you, he had to "hate you" in order to beat you. Never worked against Logan Stieber. Hope Nate can do the same.

My distaste for the Gibbons-Johnson duo turned to full blown dislike when they endorsed Evans' headbutting attempts last year.

Iowa looked good against Rutgers. Rutgers also looks decidedly better now that they have Don Pritzlaff in the room as a coach.
Am I the only person that noticed how much better Camp looked last night than he ever did in the past? His shots were more varied and he pushed himself when fatigued. I thought for sure he'd lose once he tired. But instead he maintained a solid approach. Credit to him for hard work and seemingly renewed dedication. 197 just got deeper.

any idea what's going on?
i thought Camp's stache looked great, it took me a minute to realize who he was.
as far as Johnson/Gibbons, i'm not a huge fan, i think BTN should seriously look at hiring J.D. Bergman to do B1G duels.
also not a big fan of the "Iowa Way", i love their focus and intensity, but can't stand everything else, it's uncalled for.
just my 2 cents, or everyone going this afternoon enjoy, i was planning on coming but my son has a match today.
O-H!

I-O!
Looking forward to being there today. Hope the place is packed.
It is great to be debating whether the team can win rather than which individuals might pull off a win or two against Iowa.

More important than outcome of this dual:
1) Is Hunter back, healthy and ready to go?
2) Same for BoJo
3) Will Bucks wrestle with passion against a hot Iowa team?
Winning or losing is one thing. Bucks right now need to show they are a NCAA title contender.
