Discussion Topic: Iowa in 2014-2015
Ethan Moore added to this discussion on December 30, 2014

Iowa is dominating at the Midlands putting 10 into the semis, and it occurred to me that I haven't paid much attention to them this year seemingly because they lack star power or a true villain like they've had in the past.

Looking through their line up, they are solid at every weight class with no true weakness. However, they lack up-top strength in a sure-fire finalist at the NCAA tournament, like Ramos, Metcalf, etc.

Is this team similar to the 2001 Minnesota team which won a title with no finalists but 10 AAs?

Are they legit title contenders?

Nice parallel consideration with the Minnesota team.

I also like the "villain" observation/perception comment. ("Iowa Style", "Wrestling aliens, should they be discovered", the Ramos staredown, a shove out of bounds for good measure, Carver Hawkeye Nation, "If it doesn't work...do it harder", etc.)

In the end though, it just comes down to math, right?

If they're healthy, yes. Incidentally, an unspectacular Illini squad is in 2nd place. Midlands field not as tough as Vegas or Scuffle.

I am so glad you brought this up . I have similar feelings about Iowa as well. They are as solid as it gets ,and I creep on their message boards . There consensus is they feel like we are strong but not Iowa strong, and a couple of people aren't giving us a shot barrinng Logan. All i know is I cant wait until Sunday..

I agree with you Hank about the depth at Midlands. I think that the quarterfinal match-ups at CKLV were tougher than the semi match-ups at Midlands. I don't think that several of those Iowa wrestlers would have made the semis at CKLV.

You mentioned Illinois, is Delgado hurt? - Cause I don't think that he is wrestling this weekend.

1) MINN
2a) Iowa
2b) Ohio State

I feel I've been down this road before.

Iowa is a very good team, but you're going to have to beat someone very good to win a national title. If Ohio State is who they say they are, you win a dual like this. 125, 133, 149, 157, 165 and 184 are toss ups that either team could win...it's time Ohio State started winning those bouts.

Now, winning or losing this dual has no baring on whether the Buckeyes win at NCAAs. A win here builds confidence, but you learn from losses as well. It just seems like Ohio State has had enough opportunities to learn from errors. At some point you need to start looking like a championship team.

It a perfect world that would've started already, but I think most Buckeye fans would settle for it starting tomorrow.

For the record, I think Iowa wins a close and competitive dual.

I would feel better about the dual if Hunter & Bo hadn't gotten injured early in the year. But again, March is what counts. But winning these matches helps get a better seed come March.

Midlands on BTN at 8:00 tonight. Going Sunday. Tall order with two of the go to guys coming off injury and Iowa in mid season form coming off Midlands.

If this team is going to be great this would be a good statement to make toward that.

I was considering their ability to win a national title, not the dual coming up.

I think Minnesota is far more of a threat for a NCAA title is than Iowa. They have 3 guys that could be champions.

I think Ohio State showed what they were capable of at CKLV earlier by taking 2nd place without 3 big point scorers. I think when it comes time they'll be NCAA champions. I just think they have too many point scorers for the others to keep up with.

Don't come without bringing brisket! ;-)

ps: If no one joins in for this trip, perhaps more of a notice would work, and you could make a trip for the PSU/tOSU dual on Jan. 11th.
