► Add to the Discussion Page 1, 2  Next Discussion Topic: Ivan Yariguin International Grand Prix- January 29-31, 2016 Matt Mace added to this discussion on January 25, 2016 Billed as the toughest tournament in the world, held in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia. Our Buckeyes, Logan Stieber and Kyle Snyder are gonna test their mettle against the Russians and Iranians among others this weekend. Rumor on twitter is Sadulaev will wrestle at 97kg for a potential matchup with Snyder. I may have my history wrong, so someone please feel free to correct me... I believe that the Yaragin is the former Tblisi tournament, which was regarded as the toughest in the world due to the weight classes being full of Soviet wrestlers instead of just the one Soviet that you would have to beat to win the World Championship. No doubt that Tblisi was even tougher back when the USSR was still in existence. After the breakup of the USSR, a large number of the smaller former Soviet republics could now field teams/entries in the world championships - wrestlers that may have been 2nd, 3rd, or 4th teamers in the USSR now had to be contended with along with having to beat Russia's #1 wrestler. With the breakup of the USSR, I'd have to think that the World Championships are now tougher to win than the Yaragin, but the weight classes at the Yaragin are populated with numerous Russians, Iranians, and all of the other "-stans" that have a proximate location. Whether or not the moniker "the toughest tournament in the world" is still accurate is questionable. Yarigin is upper level tournament. If you are not prepared to win, your weaknesses will get exposed. I know from personal experience. The problem with Logan against international competition is that positions he is engaging are not collegiate rules. The positions lend themselves to a lot of wrestling which he simply was not contested or challenged at before. The rules of engagement changed. He is scoring lots of points against the highest level of international wrestlers, but unfortunately he is giving up a lot of position and points as well. Basically, he is going through a learning curve. The ability to adapt relies solely on the willingness to understand what scores on you and adjust accordingly. I saw J.D. Bergman moved out to the Springs to prepare differently and just won the Schultz. I don't tend to put much stock and other systems until they are proven. Typically, people have an idea which may have some merit, but it's benefit is marginal and most of the resources go into promotion and sales.
