Boredom setting in so let's have some fun. Pick the ten best frosh in Buckeye wrestling history. Rank them from top to bottom. Who's first?

Solid list. I'd add Pucillo and Bergman.

I don't have the stats in front of me. The way a remember their freshman seasons, Pucillo was the more consistent of the two, even though Bergman finished higher at NCAAs. Maybe Pucillo at #9 or # 10? At first I wasn't sure I'd put either above Hunter Stieber. He had an amazing freshman season...but Pucillo did come in as like three seed that year. So, Pucillo at nine Stieber at 10? They all had spectacular freshman years. Ohio State has had some stud freshman...particularly in the Coah Ryan years.

I'd rank them like this:

1) Snyder--true frosh runnerup at an upper wt with a follow up World Title
2) Tomasello--Brilliant when it most mattered.
3) Stieber--Arguably #1 but first title was controversial
4) Rowlands--amazing season. Coin flip cost him.
5) Randleman--2nd as a redshirt and often dominant.
6) BoJo--Dominant over most of the comp and only two losses
7) L.Palmer--4th as true frosh and amazingly consistent.
8) My Martin--NCAA title in spectacular fashion but the weight was pedestrian.
9) Hunter--6th as true frosh including a win over Russell. Beat a lot of top upperclassmen during season.
10) Bergman--Good season, great finish as a true frosh
11)Pucillo--terrific season at a brutal wt with a 6th.
12) Tessari--True frosh with a spectacular run at NCAA's to take 4th.

So, who's missing? I can think of one other wrestler who placed as a frosh that I didn't name. Without looking at lists, can anyone come up with him?

My opinion is that performance as a true freshman has to have much greater weight than a performance as a redshirt freshman. Myles Martin being a NCAA champion as a true freshman puts him ahead of NCAA champions that won as redshirt freshmen.

That's a valid point. MyMar's championship was a perfect storm though. Every single piece to the puzzle fell perfectly into place and he went out and made it happen. But the depth of the weight class (though no fault of his) definitely has to play into consideration.

I agree, I would value Martin, J.D., Palmer, Hunter, and Kyle's performances as freshmen more than redshirts.

Others who placed as freshman would include Rickie Burton and Jeff Golz, right?
Burton was a true frosh, not 100% certain re Golz.

Didn't know about Burton. Pretty sure Golz was a true frosh.

Good point about true frosh accomplishments being different than redshirt.

Years of participation for Burton and Golz?

Hank/Mark:
Burton was a stud, four time Ohio placer for Medina Highland ('79 to '82), 4th as frosh/soph and then a two time champ.
True frosh year at Ohio State ('83) he took 6th, to my recall he waltzed into the semis, winning # of matches via his infamous "Rambo" move (he would basically charge at a guy, like a madman, and then hit him with a lateral drop), but then got knocked off three times, to fall to sixth.
I stayed/went out with him during my recruiting visit at OSU.
He seemed to be a bright, fun-loving guy, with off the chart talent.
Unfortunately, to my recall he enrolled in school for the Fall of '83, but didn't stick it out.
I've absolutely lost touch with him, over the years, last I heard he may have moved to Hawaii.
Wherever he is, I hope/bet he's having fun. :-)
Golz to my recall was a heavy from St. Ed; he was a few years before me, maybe late 70s (?), so I'll defer to someone else re specifics.
