Depth is nice, but as long as every starter gets to the end of the season in excellent health it is a red herring in terms of team performance.

Wrestlers that score team points matter. Having a great workout partner matters. Being in a positive culture matters. Talent matters. Effort matters. Development matters. The way you think about things matters.

Depth of a team is way further on down the list. True, you need someone to challenge you, but it can be a coach or a guy above you or below you in weight.

Depth matters in a situation like Jaggers and Enright. However, it sounded like T.J. was more of a personal coach/friend when Jaggers was going after his first title. He wasn't trying to take the spot. He knew Jaggers was a bit better, but really wanted to help him succeed.

This OSU team has me excited. I like when guys are scoring lots of points even if against less developed guys as it means the right culture/way of thinking is being established.

Cleary v Burcher was typical of a freshman vs. upperclassmen. Looking forward to seeing if Cleary beats himself up over it or takes it for what it is-->simple mistakes brought on by inexperience.

some unsubstantiated talk on here... what evidence is there Tomo, Bo, Snyder, Myles, KiShawn, Micah would have gone elsewhere for a lesser financial package?? Ohio St offers the going rate for top talent as does everyone.

yes i expect Penn st gets some slack, Iowa does but only with Iowa kids, Okla only with Okla kids. Parents and kids wont be dissed by low ball offers, they know the going rate.

imo if Ohio St job opened tomorrow there would be an eye-poping list of candidates --and if for some reason Cael, John Smith or Tom Brands decided to leave their schools, u can bet all 3 would be at front of the line in Columbus.

Bob - not a negative word has been uttered on this thread about the OSU program. Everyone agrees with you.

I brought up the depth issue, which is real but not of huge concern. If you don't admit that Ok. State has better depth and more ability to sustain an injury to a starter, than you're not looking objectively at the facts.

Many on here are prone to hyperbole and over reaction, which I understand. I am simply discussing wrestling on a wrestling forum and reviewing rosters, not throwing stones.

Onward an upward!

Ethan, no one mentioned u re any negativity, certainly i didnt. i appreciate the info u provided.

but if home-state alma mater allegiance meant nothing John Smith would take the Ohio St job in a second if it were open-- just like Cael left Iowa st for the best job in America at Penn st, Smith would come here for the second best, imo. Ryan helped make it that good.

"not a negative word uttered on this thread" u say?? ... yes theres been very harsh words on here about OSU program, particularly about RSing, who can forget that dialogue.

Fix would be a huge get to be sure and would add to tOSU's continued talent and depth at the lower weights. With regard to depth, isn't that what we're seeing with the Tomesello to 133 thing? You can't have it both ways. If you want depth, great wrestlers may have to sit a year or two...and great coaches will manage those situations.

Bob: I said Bucks presumably paid a lot for their top talent. I didn't say or imply that these wrestlers would have gone elsewhere for less. I will say that it's factually accurate to state the Bucks have more money tied up in fewer wrestlers than many other top programs. I don't remember where the info came from but someone published a list of top D1 programs and how many wrestlers in each are receiving scholly dollars. I remember reading it and noticing that the Bucks were spending more on fewer guys than PSU, Iowa and Okie State. I will see if I can find this info.

As Rex noted, depth is not a necessity as long as your top guys remain healthy. But that's only if the goal is end of season performance. Coach Ryan has repeatedly discussed the emphasis he places on duals. He's also publicly--in a recent AWN interview written by Bob Preusse--mentioned he feels dual performance should factor into the NCAA title equation. Therefore, it's pretty reasonable to assume he'd like to have more talent in the room.

Depth isn't the issue for the Bucks. They have one of the largest rosters in D1. It's the quality of the backups.

Hank,
i cant imagine there'd be a list remotely accurate, for one thing i don't think each athletes scholarship money is public info.

not only that but a coach puts together an entire FINANCIAL PACKAGE- thats Anthony Ralph's job now- a financial package that may include $$$ from several sources thus a athlete might be on a "Full" but only part of it athletic grant in aid $. ....Its complicated. Theres no "list" that contains all this.

athletic schol $ and various other monies that a recruit is entitled to. i know Ohio St has out of state scholar $$ for good students, minority preferance money, fact is theres pots of $ out there. This is a complicited issue thats why Ohio St needs a specialist like Anthony Ralph.

considering all that it would be impossible, imo, for there to be a accurate list of who gets what.
