Nice to see Tom Ryan receiving significant compensation for doing a great job. Doesn't hurt that the Bucks averaged over 5k per home dual. What does women's b-ball average?

Womens BBall is averaging a little over 5K according to this article.

I'm sure it's just the socialist in me, but does anyone else think it's ridiculous that sports coaches make this kind of money?

yes coaches--- players too, rewarded like princes for playing a game, doing something with a ball. Meanwhile new fed budget wants to cut block grants to states for housebound seniors Meals on Wheels, absurd. I'm a free market guy-- in general- but these excesses are crazy, and alot of these guys never produce once they sign.

(lol, however i'm glad TomR geting his due. But Ohio St basketball stinks and Matta makes 3 1/2 mil a year for mediocrity. Plenty of free agents & players drafted high then quit trying once they get their signing bonuses.)

I would absolutely agree (and I am nowhere close to a Socialist). The amount the coaches "earn" is obscene but they would be the stupid ones if they didn't take what is offered.
What bothers me a lot more is that they can make money from camps, clinics, speaking, clothing, and whatever BUT you better not buy a player a Mountain Dew or they are in big trouble. IMO, that is simply wrong.
Now look at what the NCAA administrators make if you want to feel a little more ill.

I made 18k in my 5th year as an assistant coach at tOSU in 1998. Granted we were not very good as a team. Hellickson was making good money off camps. Would be interested to know if that includes camp money. Shared office space in the stadium with Andy Teitelbaum and Lori Walker. Looks like they have been killing it for the last 20 years.

We were discussing this article at the office today.

In my personal opinion whatever happened to public service? Working for the government (or schools) to help the community you live in? Plus, these public pensions are far greater than most private sector pensions, which quite frankly no longer exist for the most part. Check out what some of your local or county governments pay people. The pension was justified because public pay was less. Not anymore.

Further, to Jim's point, what presidents and administrators get paid is pathetic. They claim to be for the students but expect -- and get -- such inflated salaries they take away from the money available to them. Yes, per capital, at a school like TOSU it isn't much but that's how it starts to get out of hand. Much like the federal government.

Go check what some private college presidents get.

Gene Smith gets one million dollars for what he does. I have every bit his education, in different areas granted, and would do it for 1/4 that.

The only thing I would say about Urb and, to some degree now TR, is they justify their salaries by performance. Rowing can be wildly successful but it isn't going to generate revenue overall, at least not like football. Football does and I bet wrestling is starting to, if it isn't already.

Maybe Bob can help but if I recall the athletic department paid for most of the millions needed to renovate the library. Obviously football carried the lion's share. This was during the Tressell years.

And I am a relatively unabashed capitalist.

I feel better. Go Bucks.

yes football i.e. athletic dept actually did donate about 5 million AND The Jim Tressel family led the library drive and donated alot themselves, maybe a million. Ohio st athletics are fully self-supporting, thru football of course but most schools subsidize their athletic dept.

Joe Paterno family donated huge amount to the Penn st library. It is said Woody Hayes never made more than 30k a year so don't feel bad Rex, lol-- Woody gave all his pay raises to his asst coaches. I use to serve him and talk to him when i worked the grille at Mr Roberts diner.

Would you do it for 1/4 of that if you knew someone else was willing to pay you $1M? Competition is out there, my man.

You mention Urban Meyer and Tom Ryan have earned high salaries. The same is true for Gene Smith. He's been a very good AD for tOSU. He's also done a fantastic service to this site, keeping one Gary Sommers away for several years now.

Yes, I would, if the question is would you leave Ohio State (or fill in whatever local school you support) to go to, for instance, somewhere in Michigan. And when I say support, I don't mean the fanboy attitude of which Michael speaks. I'm referring to the love of your community and support for its institutions' higher goals. If it's mostly about the money you go. If it's about your community, depending on where that is, $250,000 ought to be enough to get by on.

And yes, Gene Smith has done a solid job. But he has made mistakes, most notably the handling of the vest, in my opinion. Think about it: one million dollars, a pension that is likely matched by few, expense accounts, etc. I'm not picking on him. He's not the only one.

I could "suffer" by ok on $250,000 and those benefits in the Columbus standard of living. As was said in Wall Street," "how many yachts can you waterski behind?" ( or something like that)

We start teachers at $25,000-$35,000 to teach -- and protect -- our children during the school year. Add about 50% to that for benefits. Something seems out of whack in that comparison.

Gary who? Yes, you're right on that one.

Morally I agree with you all in that coaches, athletes, actors/actresses, or entertainers in general are all excessively paid. To me there is no difference between a circus clown and Lebron. They are both there for entertainment, but in a free market system you ought to get paid what you are worth. Lebron fills up stadiums, the clown does not. I think a good comparison could be drawn from the ongoing U.S. soccer debate on the pay the women's teams get versus them men. The women have been hugely successful while the men have been mediocre at best. Yet, the men are paid more. Why, because they are a draw for fans. I think athletic programs are also largely huge pieces for university in the ongoing arms race between schools to have the best and shiniest attractions for students. In the end we all pay in ticket prices, rising tuition costs, apparel, etc. The genie is out of the bottle and I'm not sure how you put it back in.

That was my point. Throw in cops, fire fighters, nurses, first responders...Heck, a garbage man does a more important job for the community then than the local college's baseball coach.

I'm not saying they shouldn't be compensated, even handsomely, for their work. I understand the free market system. It's just sad where we as a society attach worth and importance.
