Why is anybody surprised? Roger Chandler and Anthony Collica sum it up best at the 5:40 mark.

Watch the Flo documentary on Terry Brands and ask yourself if these are the role models you want for your kids?

I have a question...when people ask “what would Gable do?”, I’m wondering why he doesn’t step up? Dan Gable IS Iowa wrestling. One word from him and everything changes. Ohio State doesn’t have a figure like that (who does?). Dan Gable could shut this down. He could stop his legacy from being tarnished this way. He could preserve his program’s soul. Why doesn’t he?

Maybe he supports the way Gilman acted. I'd be disappointed if he does, but it's possible.

Rod- I'm not a 100% sure that this isn't similar to Gable, with the language and such as the obvious exception. Gable would make arrogant and aggressive comments all the time. Maybe what rankles us is the inability for Iowa to back it up or the straight disrespect Gilman shows for older more experienced guys.

Perhaps Gable has already, or plans to, handle this situation as Gable does - talk directly to Gilman. If that doesn't work, he grabs a few of "the old guard" and they talk to Gilman.

He really embarrassed himself. He just looks like a very insecure and scared kid that isn't really comfortable with public speaking and responds with aggression. He obviously didn't prepare and doesn't have much experience speaking off the cuff except sh!t talking. So that's what he resorted to. The world must be a very scary place for him amongst all these men and women that are bigger than him physically and mentally.
He reminds me of that little chicken hawk that was always messin with Foghorn Leghorn.

It has been my impression that most of the time when anyone starts talking about “taking it outside” they usually haven’t actually ever been punched in the mouth...real hard and with bad intentions.

Also, on behalf of the Alpha Little Man community, I want to apologize to all demographics and clearly renounce these Lone Wolf Napoleon antics on Mr. Gilman’s part.

Neither they, nor his hat selection, represent us, our values, or what we stand (albeit not very high) for in any way.

Agree with everyone who is knocking Gilman. He was classless period.

I got the impression that this event is supposed to be a bit of a roast with minor barbs traded back and forth. Clearly, however, Gilman went way too far.

Hank, yes, that was my impression as well. But of course those who do the best at "roasts" have some semblance of wit, and intellect. Based upon this, my sense is that Gilman has neither. He came/comes across as an absolute tool. Period.

I use to get rankled by the obnoxious way people do things.

No different than Brands right out of college.

The good about it. He is all about fukyuisms; It makes him mentally strong. Not weak (that is ridiculous to argue otherwise). It is narcissistic. He doesn't care about your opinion, which allows him to discount others. This makes him tough as nails when a match is on the line, albeit he has lost quite a few of those. But, he has shown his resilience and a loss means he just didn't prepare enough. He is 110% behind his athletes and Iowa University. Not all Iowa wrestlers are like this, but I have met quite a few that drink the KoolAid of which Iowa is the epicenter of wrestling.

So, how many people have achieved high levels that you would consider narcissists?

I would say that thinking your better than others with a goal of domination is akin to high level wrestling.

Some guys have social skills while others don't care. It simply gets in the way of a goal.

Rex: I like the whole post but your last part is amazing. Brilliant observation. Champions as a whole are not necessarily full blown narcissists but a lot (all?) have narcissistic tendencies.

I try not to make it a habit to disagree with Rex Holman, but I can only agree to a point with his assessment of Gilman. Thomas Gilman is ten times the wrestler that I could ever have been...due, in large part, to his attitude. He’s been incredibly successful. He has a spectacular resume. His record speaks for itself.

And therein lies the problem. I may be being too critical here, but when was the last time this young man met one of his stated goals? He made the World Team. I assume that was a goal of his. There’s one.

Remember when he talked about he and Clark being better than McDonough and Ramos? Three of those guys won NCAA titles. The loud one didn’t. He bashed Metcalf...two titles and three team titles. Can Gilman boast such stats? Nope, but it doesn’t stop him from bashing people who did what he couldn’t. He was on one of the best World Teams American has ever put on the mat. Two guys won titles. What do you here from them? Crickets, tumbleweeds.

I guess what I’m trying to say is if you’re going to be this level of ass, then you better end the season with your hand raised. He doesn’t. His attitude may get him to the (totally amazing) level that he is, but Jordan Burroughs and Kyle Snyder are far more successful than him without being outward assholes. At the NCAA level, 30 titles were won over three years. He won zero.

Bottom line, his way has led him to a career almost everyone would envy, but it has also led him to not achieve any of his stated goals.

Sidebar, nothing public about Spencer Lee points to a similar attitude. The only thing I agreed with that Gilman said was that current Hawkeyes need to step up and take the baton with regard to leadership on the team. What if they don’t lead like he thinks they should? When Lee takes over, will Gilman allow him to lead the Hawkeyes his way?
