Discussion Topic: Brakan Mead and the 125 Situation

Kind of an intriguing young man. He's been a bit up and down but certainly shows some fight and a couple nice tricks. (He looked to have 2 and 2 against Oliver although the FB camera angle was not giving a complete look). I like his potential if he's given time to develop.

I wonder if the Bucks would consider redshirting both Mead and Heinselman next season? Give Mead time to develop an offense and Heinselman time to grow. Then let them compete for the spot. See who emerges. Whoever it is should be pretty good.

Good idea? Bad idea?

Who do you have at 125 next season with both of them on the bench?

While I don't see that happening, Both Koontz and Hunter Lucas would be next in line.

From what we've seen before, with lower level competition, Hunter Lucac seems to progressing fairly well. But, I don't think that the brothers are too far behind.

I think you almost have to wrestling Mead next year with Henselman's size (RS Hens). Then, in 19-20, let them have it out.

This is Mead’s red-shirt season. He’s learning more now than he would if he were redshirting. He’ll be better next year for the lumps he takes this year. In a few weeks he’ll be backing up the best 125-pounder in the NCAA. This is a development year. Ohio State is good enough that it costs the team nothing for Mead to learn on the job. The only way he red-shirts now is if he’s soundly beaten by an underclassman in a wrestle off.

Had forgotten that when Nate returns, Mead becomes a backup. Kept thinking he'd be starting all season. Actually, I suspect he'll still start quite a few events even when Nate returns. But your points are understood.

Let the kids go at it and see if one stands out above the others. If there is not much separating them then let those who have used their redshirt man 125. Heinselman is undersized for sure, but Braken is small as well. Might come down to what the plan is for next years team. Myles and Joey still have redshirts available. Does anyone know if there has been any consideration to using those?

Pretty sure we have Nate Keaton coming in next year too. He has given Mead tough matches in the past. He didn't do too well at Ironman though. He came in as a 12 seed and lost his opening bout to the eventual 6th place winner. Then went 1-1 in consis, losing to a NPer. Ironman is always brutal but this year's 126 bracket was ridiculous.

No, Keaton is committed to Wheeling Jesuit now. He opened his recruiting back up in the fall and committed to Wheeling Jesuit about a month ago.

Any thought given to Jordan Decatur wrestling 125 after next year for tOSU. He is at 126 right now. Certainly not small at the weight but also not oversized. I could see him manning the weight for the 2019-20 year.

As for next year, tOSU will have a “hole” compared to their lineup this year whether it be Mead or Heinselman.

Good read here and don't miss the comments section. Andy Vance is doing a good job educating the Buckeye Nation on wrestling. Is he on dot net?

Spot on! And his narrative below in the comments section is even better. You can tell his own learning curve is getting pretty steep and quickly. Glad to see it.
