Discussion Topic: Ohio University vs. Old Dominion cancelled after six matches
Christopher Henderson added to this discussion on February 12, 2018

The OU versus Old Dominion dual meet was ended after the 165 lbs. match because of a "medical incident" on Sunday.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening before? Was the referee injured or incapacitated and unable to continue?

Maybe one the Moore brothers know what happened.

Another forum indicated an OU wrestler had an unexpected medical incident. It didn’t indicate what it was. Hope he is well.

Quote from Brady Hiatt's post:

"

Quote from James Kessen's post:

"Brady what happened with Reese? I saw a tweet from his brother that he is doing ok. thoughts and prayers to him and the family."

He was beating #17 ranked guy 7-0 in 2nd period. They went out of bounds and when he was taking top position, he collapsed. Needed emergency medical attention.

Saw him at Columbus hospital last night and, if I hadn't seen what I saw, I wouldn't have thought anything was wrong. They are conducting tests to try and determine what caused it to happen.

I was in car returning from OAC Girls JH tournament - and was freaking out thinking the worst after seeing him drop and then seeing tweet that meet was cancelled. When I got a "he's on the way to a hospital and is breathing" I felt a wave of the greatest emotion, relief, come over me. It could have been tragic.

Talked to him today and no updates, just undergoing many tests."

I was at the dual and it was truly one of the scariest things I have ever witnessed. Reese passed out and the trainers and doctor had to perform CPR. It was a rough scene to be a part of. I feel for the Reese family and his teammates and coaches.

This definitely made me think how unimportant a win or loss on a wrestling mat really means. I am so relieved to know that he is doing better, and I pray for his parents after watching their son have to go through that.

i was in attendance- Feb 9 1996 - when Don Ferris collapsed while officiating the Walsh Jesuit--St EDs dual at Walsh, and died immediately on the mat. He called a stalemate during the 119 match, took a step back and collapsed. Of course the meet was cancelled.

Don was a Cleveland police detective, a great guy and one of Ohio's elite officials. He wasnt very old either --maybe 40 --and looked to be in great shape.

Don had just told me before the match how bummed he was because the Browns had left town, but not for the usual reasons. His reason being he had a stadium job on Sundays. His job was to go into the stands and roust out the fans who had paid for their seats with checks that bounced.

Bob,
The thing I remember most about Don was that he was the President of the NOWOA when I became an official. To say his language was salty would be polite. However, the first time I saw him on TV in his real job, he was using all the correct police lingo for describing the perps and the situation and everything. It was hilarious.
The other story is from the first time I worked with him. he was doing a varsity match at Riverside and I had the JV match. At that time, I did not know he was a policeman and when he was changing, he had a gun strapped to his leg. It caught me off-guard and my question was "Are you expecting a rough crowd?".
You might not know but he and Ray Anthony were cousins.
A great guy and we miss him a lot.

"rough crowd", lol! ....good story Jim, i love a good story. I never forgot the Don Ferris-Browns story. ....At a later date i went to the Ferris home to meet the family and wrote about it in AWN. At the Ironman next December we brought the family in and gave a eulogy to Don Ferris.

btw, Pat Galbincea was a storyteller. Galby told me about Dick Bliss the 40 some years former coach at Aurora. During a dual Bliss walked to the table and asked the ref, "Is it against the rules to tell a referee 'THIS IS HORRIBLY OFFICIATED MATCH'? The ref replied 'One point deduction for Aurora'."

Bob,
Since you mention Coach Bliss, I have one for you.
I was at Perry about 25 years ago. Aurora was the visiting team and Dennis MacLeod had the varsity match. Coach Bliss was never one to miss a beat and during the match he went to the table about "whatever". He asked Dennis if an official could penalize a coach for what he was thinking. Dennis looked puzzled but told Coach Bliss that, no, the coach had done nothing wrong by "thinking".
Coach Bliss immediately said "Good because I think that call really stunk".
It was really hard not to laugh out loud.
