The Brakeman Report.

Cutting two weight classes before Sectionals.

VHS camera/tripoding of matches.

Trying to configure your walkman for warming up.

Mat Maids.

Continuing a match after unconciousness.

Talking/reading/playing cards throughout a tournament sans Internet/personal phones.

Vision Quest.

Wow, that list makes me feel old! A few of those I didn't realize that they don't do anymore, goes to show you how out of touch I am

Using half a roll of tape on your headgear
Halo headgear. Once in a blue moon I’ll see some of these pop up but not often.
Sudden Death OT; now it’s sudden victory
OSU duals in the French field house. (A good thing)
Chanel wrestling!
Having a wrestling magazine subscription
Seeding meetings

Using plastics.

Weighing-in , being a little over, and running to make weight.

Polyester singlets.

“Joing the match in the third period with the score...” being announced while watching a tape delayed broadcast of the NCAA finals.

great topic Justin!
the real Mentor Meatgrinder, Div I, one year Mentor had 10 state champs out of 13 wts. ..Div II Firestone was a monster too, but they got 5 quals, sometimes Mentor only THREE.

one class/division only with 4 placers per wt

Southwest conf was mighty with N Olmsted, Fairview Park, Olmsted Falls, Bay Village were state powers.

uniforms with leggings (only Maple now)

the Plain Dealer covering wrestling (Galbincea)

Brakeman report excitement, fans would rush to make a copy

no OT, a tied match decided by long criteria list.

Mike Milkovich in the corner wearing his red flannel shirt

Howard Ferguson's Super Quads, St Eds vs the world

the looooong sometimes treacherous drive to Wright State from northern Ohio

most everyone hating St Eds

no Defense Soap

there was no Ironman, no Beast. No real national coverage. As the great Greg Elinky told me, (he got pinned by Oklahoma's John Laviollate in SuperQuad), "I didnt know who Laviollate was."

OMG yes, ABC Wide World of Sports with Frank Gifford & Ken Kraft I believe, only showing parts of the matches, but that's all we had, no ESPN!!

Calling a buddy on a rotary phone to inform him that we do/don’t have practice.

Justin: you took quite a few of the good ones.
Brady: your last one is GOLD!!!!!!

Asics split-sole shoes (which, no doubt, improved technique).🙄

The poster with a lithe John Smith in his prime standing on the world with his gold medal around his neck.

Rolling up and moving - by “locking arms” - 800 lbs of sectioned mat from the drama stage to the cafeteria. And back.

Lengthy newspaper articles with mutliple action shots the week of State(s).

Flowing McIlravy mullets, brinming with hardcore mulletude.

Death trap “Universal Weight Machines” which could crush a skull cap (bench) or sheer a kneecap off (leg press) in a second.

Pull-up peg boards/climbing ropes constructed at dizzying heights.

Jeff Jordan teaching technique at the Disabato’s Greater Columbus Wrestling Camp.

Mid-match shoelace tying.

Unlimited "injury" time outs

Wiping up blood with whatever rag (or t shirt) was handy instead of calling out a haz-mat squad.

Matches ending in a tie.
Richmond Heights. Wrestling
State Meets at St. Johns arena
No Wrestleback at tournaments unless the person you lost to wins his next match - Now all tournaments are double elimination
Wrestling practice in a classroom - clear out the desks and chairs and roll out the mats
Rollers to place the mats on and move them across the gym

Medina being the only big tourney around (Top Gun was growing but not there yet)

Big weight cuts meaning big cuts. Not a good thing. I like that today's wrestlers don't understand this, b/v it wasn't pretty.

90 degree wrestling rooms

Piling into teammates cars for out of town tournaments. Like 16 year old kids. Can you imagine?

I thought the Brecksville tournament was the oldest holiday tournament in the state.

Of course, I wrestled when mats where still made out of hard packed straw and when you shot for a takedown it was always up hill and through the snow.

Reading the box scores of dual meets in the Plain Dealer to see what happened throughout the city.

I saved those clippings in a shoe box and used them as "scouting" material when I coached.

Also, calling the late, great Al Carroll after a dual meet to give him the results of our bouts. Every coach in the city called Al and he kept track of everything. If you wanted information, you called Al. He was hard of hearing so you shouted into the phone.
