► Add to the Discussion Page 1, 2  Next Discussion Topic: Yianni's appeal proves successful Hank Kornblut added to this discussion on August 15, 2019 A court arbitrator today said the decision to review the sequence between Yianni and Retherford--in which the officials changed their minds on the scoring--was made too late. In other words, the challenge took place too long after the action had ended. That match has been declared a no contest and Yianni and Zain will have to wrestle again. Jackson added to this discussion on August 15, 2019 Honestly, vacating the second match is probably the wrong decision if they concluded that the challenge was not timely. In essence, it's like failing to appeal a legal decision in time. They should have reverted to the original scoring, which had Yianni winning the match. This is one of those confluence of factors where “bad facts make bad law,” as the saying goes. Under the circumstances this may be the best possible outcome of a bunch of bad options. Settle it on the mat. Still, I feel for Zain. Not his fault Cael didn’t throw the brick sooner. And I also believe Yianni sweeps the next two, though I’m still bitter he got the call against McKenna. He states that their major objection was not how the rules were interpreted but the fact the decision to change the score was made after 45 seconds had passed and the match had ended. He wanted Yianni to have a chance to re-wrestle the last 45 seconds and they were denied the opportunity. Evidently, the USA Wrestling rules favor Koll's point of view. Hence the arbitrator's decision to vacate the outcome. Ironically, Yianni and Zain wrestled internationally recently with Yianni winning and Zain getting hurt. Not sure yet if Zain is 100%. Also, Koll kept mentioning that Yianni still has to win 2 of 3. I'm not sure but it appears possible they are going to re-wrestle the entire series of matches. In other words, Zain's first match win may not count.
