Quote from David Brown's post:

"I think the Buckeyes need to make some changes. For years now we have watched as guys stagnate and don't get better with time. Your best chance to win a natty as a Buckeye is your Freshman year. Many of our wrestlers seem to diminish with time, not get better.
Getting a high level assistant to bring fresh persective would be nice. The Jaggers and Jordan hires are nice but don't bring fresh perspective.
Now that we can't use the weight issue, not sure how we will defend Heinselman's performances this year.
Buckeyes need change."

What a dramatic overreaction to an early season open. Looking at last year’s senior class, I’d say McKenna, Jordan and Martin all made big strides throughout their Buckeye careers. Relax. Things will be just fine. Ohio State with a young team will be top five at NCAAs.

I would argue that the coaching staff has been more adaptable and willing to change then just about any other program. TR has brought in Greco specialists, recruiting specialists, etc. Tervel is widely sought after by just about everyone, and the fact is that with success comes the loss of guys like Rosselli. For every Kollin Moore you’re going to have a Camplitano. The Bucks have had lots of success and will continue to do so. Winning is hard. If it were that easy then Iowa wouldn’t be locked in a decade plus title drought. PSU is producing at UCLA basketball levels. The program is in great hands, IMO.

Not sure if this team will finish top five because it's currently a three man squad with Pletcher, Sasso and Moore. Who else is going to AA?

Hank, three finalists plus some wrestle back success gets you to top five.

Three finalists? Pletcher, Moore and Sasso will be untouchable? Myles Martin was a prohibitive favorite last season and ended up 3rd. Three AA's? Yes. All Finalists--it's possible but a lot can go wrong.

Bucks could be top five but they've got aways to go.

Three finalists? Pletcher, Moore and Sasso will be untouchable? How soon you forget Myles Martin. Three AA's? Yes. All Finalists--it's possible but not likely.

Bucks could be top five but they've got a long ways to go."

So fun to see the Buckeyes program be in a position where the past 5 years never being out of the top 3, including a NCAA title, to go along with numerous Big 10 titles leads to a call for a change in the coaching staff and questions about the current teams future.

Welcome to football-esque criticism!!! Love it!!!

FWIW--I'd much rather watch the bucks wrestle than the Clowns play football. What a clstrfk.

Yes, Tom Ryan is amazing. Yes, the program is great. Noticing early trends is important though as is introducing fresh technique. This is not the time to dig in and get stubborn. To say that M. Martin and McKenna made "great strides" over the years is either cynical or silly. The examples of guys who diminish with time in the Buckeyes room are too numerous to count. Going all the way back to Pucillo and most recently Nato, B Jordan and Martin. (Insert injuries as a reason here). I just think Tom needs some fresh eyes in the room, that's all. Snyder literally gave this as a reason for leaving ORTC.

The talk of trends gets me wondering what the sports of wrestling has done when it comes to analytics. Has anyone heard of data analytics being applied to wrestling for meaningful strategic use?

I know for a fact Zeke Jones does/did. He was the first I heard communicate, with data, certain situations and techniques are "must haves" due to the high percentage of scores.

I also heard Cary Kolat speak directly to this at his camp this summer. "Why are we doing this technique? Because it has the highest percentage of scores - aka IT'S EFFECTIVE - in the NCAA tournament."

They might not publish their findings, but I'd bet MANY are using analytics to guide certain elements for their team.

I thought this was an interesting article, somewhat related: https://intermatwrestle.com/articles/21845.

I read here that there is a whiz (double majoring in statistical science and computer science and minoring in electrical and computer engineering) at Duke who wrestled in high school who is doing some high-level analysis for them: https://www.trackwrestling.com/PortalPost.jsp?postId=1668504132.

David,

Just food for thought here. When KS was an undergrad (completely under the control of the tOSU coaching staff), he won a world title, and Olympic title, and a 2nd world title beating Sadulaev in the process. He graduates, is no longer "under" their training requirements, and he wins silver and then bronze. So an argument can be made that he "declined" once he left their "control".

M.Martin was wrestling, from my eyes, better as a senior then ever before. One clunker of a match doesn't change the fact that he was greatly improved from entering to exiting tOSU.

Does this mean that heads should be buried in the sand? Nope. Does this mean that we throw out the coaches and replace them with "fresh" eyes? I'd argue nope as well.

Iowa has consistently performed worse than the Buckeyes over the past 5-10 years. Should Tom Brands go? I don't think so either.

McKenna arrived in Columbus without much offense and within a year was mauling quality opponents. He improved a lot. Anyone with a functioning set of eyes could tell Myles Martin was much better as a senior than as a freshman. Unless of course you’re your observations are based only on where he stood on the NCAA podium.

Ben Askren has been collecting and organizing data on the attack rates of specific offensive and defensive scoring at the world championships from this past year. He did a couple of share outs on the Rudis wrestling podcast.

Quite interesting podcasts. Interesting to note, I believe he said guys from his club were going through the matches and recording the data. So not only is data being collected, but those club members were watching a ton of high level wrestling. Pretty sweet win-win deal there.
