Discussion Topic: 20-21 High school wrestling season
Jared Ball added to this discussion on October 31, 2020
Reports came out yesterday’s that in addition to Illinois, now New Jersey is suspending their high school wrestling season. Michigan and one other state are mandating both practicing and actually competing with masks. Rumors are swirling that the governor may be looking at an extended fall break from Thanksgiving through the beginning of January and the OHSAA is rumored to be delaying all winter sports competitions until January. I know these are rumors, but...I really hope that the powers that be do what is necessary to protect the post season at all cost in this situation. Ohio was the only state not to hold its state tournament last season out of all fifty. Many larger tournaments are dropping like flies already. I hope the state coaches association starts throwing out some ideas of how to manage this and protect the sanctity of the post season. In my opinion, if organizers are willing to put in the work they can figure out a way to make this happen in a safe way. Having worked in schools during this crazy time period I firmly believe that if you wait to be told what to do in this time period than nothing will get accomplished. I think the coaches need to start proposing ideas to the decision makers about how to make this happen. If we wait on the health department or the Governors office to make the call another post season will not happen. If they can make football work, with fans no less, I think they can make wrestling work in some capacity.

I think the smart move is to push competition to January and limit meets to duals, maybe nothing bigger than a quad. Start the sectional the 1st week of February and give a two week window in between the sectional, district, and state (NCAA model). No fans, or at least stick to the capacity model of 15% like they had for football, but that was outside. Coaches will probably have to conduct temperature checks prior to events. I dunno. I just think you have to protect the post season some how.

In PA, most tournaments have been cancelled - Escape the Rock for example. Seems that schools/conferences in my area (SE PA) are going to start the season maybe a couple of weeks later than normal with in-conference dual meets only.
But the situation is fluid...nothing definite from the state at this time.

We'll most likely find out this afternoon if this schedule remains the same over the next few weeks and beyond.

Agreed. Given his track record he likes to soften the blow by stating what could/is going to happen before it does.
I think football games played this weekend are safe but beyond that are in jeopardy.
I think the wrestling season is in major jeopardy. I hope we can at least have an abbreviated season beginning sometime in January and ending with a state tournament at the end of March but who knows.

I agree, Joe. Practice in December, Wrestling a 6 week season in January and Feb.
One option I read - and liked was have two weeks between district and state tournaments. Could do it between sectional and district but the numbers are cut pretty good after sectionals.

You're right Jared, my mistake, there is no Ivy League football this year. But with no Cornell or Princeton wrestling that will definitely help a lot of guys come NCAA time, if there is any.
