When you are coached up on top wrestling and have aptitude for it; it's the difference maker when margins are slim in other areas of wrestling.

The four matches (I watched) that went to overtime, were lost by the man given choice and took bottom.

Banging this drum at least one more time.

You can't blindly take bottom, just because it was always done that way.

It was like watching Groundhog's Day yesterday play out in real life.

Unless you are hugely skilled in escaping off bottom; choosing bottom is no bueno.

Especially with top rules where there’s almost no stalling. You can push or pull a dude out of bounds. Pick up a leg and run the dude out of bounds. Sit on / figure 4 ankles.

Surprising more guys don’t do the short sit series like Nico Megaludis used to do.

Taking down a dude who just needs to hold position for 30 seconds is only slighlty less difficult.

When I coached, If my wrestler was being soundly beaten on their feet and couldn't get out, third period choice I'd say, "Take top. We haven't been there yet." It sometimes provided an 11th hour glimmer of hope and opportunity that panned out. (Shrug)

And for once Penn State screws up and takes down in overtime of the Bartlett v Mathews match and still ends up winning on last second heroics.

Kudos to Beau for attacking all the way to the end. It was pretty ballsy.

Mathews had that one won if he had'nt lost focus.

@ REX
You are brilliant Tate just used the strategy to perfection. He deferred in criteria, his opponent choose down, and he rode him out. Then chose neutral and won the match. I hope you are coaching Rex! Great call!

Jesse won using that same strategy.

Rex -- I don't know if it was a mistake. They HAD to make a choice.

If you don't win the flip and it's deferred to you, going down is still the preferred choice.

Pretty sure it's a glitch in the rules that can be gamed.

But yes, defer and the opponent will likely choose down.

For sure, don't choose down of your own volition.

Upon deferral, he could choose bottom, neutral or top. 30 second neutral would be dumb; so, no. But, maybe top. However, it is hardwired to take bottom.

If he chooses top and he rides you out; then you take top and ride him out. Back on your feet.

However, the most likely scenario we are seeing played out is if/when he chooses down and you ride him for :30. You wrestle neutral in "your choice" :30 period and don't get taken down or give up a stalling point. You win.

And this thread should be renamed to properly reflect the concept.

Definitive advantage in overtime.

Yeah SMH! Next year the approach to criteria will change drastically. Rex you just was early to the trend.
