Discussion Topic: Bucks 23-24 Lineup
Hank Kornblut added to this discussion on May 8, 2023

Taking a stab:

125: Gonzalez and/or Kilkeary
133: Nic Bouzakis
141: Dylan D'Emilio
149: Sam Sasso or Vic Voinovich
157: Sam Sasso or Vic Voinovich
165: Paddy Gallagher or Bryce Hepner
174: Carson Kharchla or Bryce Hepner
184: Seth Shumate or Luke Geog
197: Hoffman or Geog
285: Nick Feldman
Redshirt--Rocco Welsh, Jesse Mendez, Ryder Rogotzke, Brock Herman, Brandon Cannon
Transfer--Vic Voinovich

Voinovich transferring in is conjecture on my part but I do think he'd fit and I have to think the Bucks would have interest. Plus he has Ohio roots, former teammate Brock Herman is on the team, etc...

The Bucks are no longer an easy team to predict and with recruits like Davino and Birden a year off, fierce competition for many lineup spots is likely to be the norm.

For next season, the only sure things at the moment to me are Bouzakis, D'Emilio, Sasso, Kharchla and Feldman although I'm not positive as to which weights some of them will go. I think Hoffman will have to fight to win a spot. Same for Gallagher. I expect the St Eds duo of Hepner and Geog to push them hard for spots. Gonzalez vs Kilkeary is likely to be a brawl which may play out over much of the season. My sense of it is that Kilkeary may prove to be better but would you use him all season unless you thought he could score at NCAA's? Many people may see Davino as the future of 125 but that will depend on if he stops growing.

Bucks could have a huge logjam in the future with Bouzakis, Mendez, Davino and Cannon (assuming his health issues are behind him). They are also going to be cluttered with Shumate, Rogotzke and Geog around 184-197. Rocco Welsh is probably your heir apparent at 174. If he gets too big for the weight, then things really tighten up.

I didn't mention Jordan Decatur because I don't see where he fits. Either he's transferring or he's staying at Ohio State for personal reasons. I do think he could be an impact wrestler for any of Ohio's other D1 programs.

Am I missing someone obvious? Am I wrong to assume Kharchla starting is a near certainty?

I thought I read or saw something that said Geog can’t make 184 and will be going 197.

Tom Ryan recently told Flo that Gonzalez is not a 125 and will move up.

Kharchla is moving up to 174. TBD on where in the lineup Sasso lands.

Hank, I completely forgot about Brandon Cannon. He ends his senior season ranked fourth at 138. We should be discussing him more.

Victor just committed to Iowa so you can remove him

I was impressed when I watched his videos. I think he's a steal.

The Iowa boards think he is a room guy. I doubt he got much.

They have Chittum at 157 and Siebrecht at 149

Admit I wanted him but it's hard to say how he'll pan out. Based on recent history, he's better off at Iowa than Okie State but there's no guarantee he'll start for the Hawks.

Wasn't Siebrecht 157 last season? He's a shifty wrestler. Can he really move down?

In the off season anything is possible. During the season who knows.

125: McCrone it is then?? Great back side run at U20s.
133: Bousakis, should be an AA threat right away.
141: Assumption is D’Emilio for another year. RS Mendes. C Canon spot starts.
149: Sasso, Brown spot starts. Who is coming in behind Sammy?
157: Here is where it gets dicey. Is Paddy staying put? 2-2 at national tourney. With positive health can he jump levels?
165: Hepner’s to lose? I know he has wins over Kharchla and Amine. His style is very scrambly and ride dependent. He certainly will be fun to watch, but 165 is still likely one of the deepest weights in the nation. Does he have the offense to get victories over the field. Guess we will find out.
174: How effective will Kharchla be moving up a weight? This weight class is not nearly as deep, which bodes well. I could see guys with length continuing to give him some issue. Hopefully he finds health and regains form.
184: Is this Shumate’s to lose?
197: is Hoffman returning? Five years of a guy is enough to determine whether or not you like him for a sixth. I’m not sure what happened to him the second half of last year, but he was not the same guy he was in the first half. His jr year was an outlier and probably not a true indicator of his actual ability. I think it’s time to move on.
285: Feldman time. No Gable, No Parris. Likely a PSU Air Force show down in the final. Is he big enough. He could, should, be a AA threat immediately if at full strength. Fingers crossed.

On the most optimistic side possible: Sammy gets a title, Bousakis, D’Emilio, maybe Kharchla, and Feldman AA. I’ll put the line at plus or minus 4 All Americans until we see what shakes out. Too much unknown to determine if it’s a trophy team. I think in two years it is.

Jared a couple thoughts to your post

149. Brock Herman you forgot about. Beat Ty Wilson to win a state title.

197. Hoffman was not the same last year bc of injury. He had to stay on bike to stay in shape last month or two of season and didn’t even live wrestle. I would still rather he move on and let Geog gain experience.

285. Gable I think has a very good chance of coming back. He wanted to this season and something happened at very end he said. He was going to wrestle two duals big tens and ncaas. I believe he is hungry to win another NCAA title and hodge trophy. He then stated he still has one more year of eligibility.
