Is Fenton a probable starter? Or is he just another competitor with Gonzalez and Kilkeary at 125?

Didn't paint a rosy picture of UVA!

I don’t see him as an all American threat but could definitely see him as a border qualifier type. He beat mccrone 5-4 at Ironman, he lost to cannon 1-0 at Ironman, lost to davino 3-2 at Ironman.

Freshman year won state
Sophomore year got canceled COVID
Junior year had many health problems and didn’t compete postseason
Senior year got third

He and mccrone and kilkeary will battle for the spot. Probably a close three way battle.

Iron sharpens iron*: With these 3 wrestlers competing for the spot they should all make each other better.

*or is it paper wraps rock?

"Didn't paint a rosy picture of UVA!"

Nope -- but sounds like some sour grapes there also.

Agree that he would have been better served not commenting on UVA. But personally I'm giving him a mulligan.

He adds comp at 125 but he's not a needle moving pick up at this point. Maybe he'll surprise us?

I’d be surprised if Kilkeary didn’t redshirt. I also think this is likely the weakest weight on the team.

One of the dynamics that undermines a wrestler out of high school is that he is the center of attention and his development is the priority. Plus, he has his place on the curve.

A wrestler's place on the curve can regress. Their development stalls, practice isn't progressive and everything seems overwhelming. It kind of sucks and certainly could be viewed as sour grapes. That being said all parties are guilty to some extent on what happens.

Basically, everything is cherry when you have forward momentum and once it stalls you feel like you are stuck in the desert and out of water.

As a newcomer, you literally have to be able to walk into a sheet storm and come out smelling like Downy fresh to be considered successful.

Way easier to be successful if you are out ahead of the curve and part of a winning culture.

I'd say UVA has a typical wrestling culture.

Take UVA Aiello 197 for example. Coulda, shoulda, woulda beat Dean in NCAAs but came up short.

Aiello is a stud. Put him in a PSU room/singlet, different outcome.

At the end of the day, PSU is better prepared due to culture.

UVA has been a lower tier team for years now. Losing Gavin, Leen on the staff hurt. Garland not a great recruiter.

I feel like Virginia could be much better than it is. They did just land a verbal from the DeSales kid, top 220 in the nation. Hartley state champ just signed as well.

I sort of feel like they're right where they should be. Strong school academically, but it's not a good wrestling state, they don't have a rich wrestling history, don't yet have a ton of money behind the program, and they're in the ACC.

They've done well recruiting NE Ohio though, that's for sure.
