125 #13 Brendan McCrone #76 Justin Cardani
133 #5 Nic Bouzakis #113 Kole Brower
141 #3 Jesse Mendez #28 Danny Pucino
149 #8 Dylan D'Emilio #10 Kannon Webster
157 #19 Paddy Gallagher #69 Joe Roberts
165 #14 Bryce Hepner #27 Chris Moore
174 #23 Rocco Welsh #9 Edmond Ruth
184 #24 Gavin Hoffman #214 Cooper Wettig
197 #25 Luke Geog #60 Isaiah Pettigrew
285 #9 Nick Feldman #13 Luke Luffman

(rankings above reflect wrestlestat, not a ranking service)

On paper, this shouldn't be a very close dual. Illinois is coming off of a 27-6 loss to Mizzou, and only have a few ranked guys. That said, there are some interesting matchups, and it could end up being closer than you'd think, depending on who goes for OSU.

This should be Welsh's first big test. Not expecting a win, but if it's a competitive match I think that bodes well for the rest of his season.

I'm expecting Feldman may sit, and wondering if we see Shumate at 184.

Great yardstick match for Rocco, nothing to lose, can't wait to see it!

I certainly hope Feldman wrestles, I guess I can't imagine why he wouldn't.

Go Bucks!

Re: Feldman, he's clearly limited by that knee. I don't know if it's something where sitting may be beneficial or not.

The dual was on the line vs. Cornell, and he wrestled. But Swenski was also listed on the lineup card. Leads me to think there's a chance they pick and choose his spots until the post season.

He already has enough matches wrestled.

I know it’s just probable lineups but Nick is only 285 listed.

Hoffman is not listed at 184 and it’s Ryder and Shumate.

165 iHepner is the only one listed. He did just win an open tournament in Edinboro Sunday with 4 bonus wins.

125 has McCrone or Vinny.

Looks like ranked Ruth and/or Luffman may not wrestle either.
Glad to see Hepner starting to wrestle week to week.
Not sure why Byrd and Braunagel brothers listed in Illinois roster but have not wrestled this season??

Braunagel boys on Olympic Redshirt (Greco I think?). Byrd injured, possibly medical RS but he has a standard RS to work with in any case.

Mike Poeta was a very impressive competitor but he has struggled to elevate Illinois as a program.

Thankful for Wilcox, going down to 157, what a team player. I just hope Hepner can stay healthy.

A couple of thoughts.
- regarding Poeta, he’s pieced together an elite staff and had competitive teams so far early in his coaching career. I see this year as a fall of from that trajectory, eluding to what Hank said. Illinois is on the rise in high school wrestling, and he’s not keeping in state talent with guys like Davino. I’m betting they bounce back next year. Their facilities are also subpar in comparison to the rest of the Big Ten. They are much closer to Michigan State then the upper tier.
-I know nothing of Paddy or an injury, but I wonder if Wilcox wrestling 157 hasnt happened in a minute. He will be an enormous 157.
-Hepner wrestling and winning an open is a move to get more matches towards qualification status for seeding. I’m thinking we see him from here on out.
-Feldman needs to wrestle unless injured. Limited or not he will need to figure out how to wrestle with that brace. He appears to be getting to legs fine. Finishing is another matter. I think more than anything, him missing a RS is the bigger reason why we’ve seen some struggles. Luffman is a fringe AA guy. This is the type of win Nick needs if he is seriously going to push for a podium finish.

Wow.

Feels like a little more than bad luck at this point. This will be two out of three years where Paddy's development is heavily hampered by injuries. Three out of five years for Carson. Feldman working on two for two. Hepner injured coming into the season. Hoffman injured coming into the season.

All unrelated? Too much wrestling? Practicing too hard? Practicing the wrong things? Bad training staff? Frustrating.
