Discussion Topic: NCAA has a reaction time problem

That's one of my takeaways from the college season.

It's often that a wrestler is put on his back from neutral (I don't mean in a scramble/danger position) and is seemingly given 2-3 seconds to 'react' before a takedown is awarded and back points counted.

I saw it easily 5 times this weekend.

The easiest example was Kilkeary vs. Penn State but that scenario happens often.

My thoughts:

1. Award the offensive wrestler! Every sport legislates offense into their rules, except wrestling. What would be the issue of rewarding the offensive wrestler with points and then the defensive wrestler with an escape? Are we against scoring?

2. If the ref can count to two, you're on your back. Period.

3. If you are fighting to get off your back, you're on your back. Period.

This seems not tough to legislate and probably would actually help the officials. Current scoring/system doesn't reward offensive attempts as much as it should.

I mean get out of here with the Bartlett style of grabbing a collar tie and holding on for dear life. So boring.

If you can view this post from OU's Instagram, the first pic of Raike in a head and arm. This was not awarded any points. This was a head and arm from neutral. Beautiful throw. Defensive wrestler very clearly fighting off his back. Zero points.

I attempted to copy and paste but couldn't.
