Just saw Zack Donovan from Mason Ohio won his second consecutive d2 title. He wrestles for Tiffin University. I didn’t know much about him so I looked him up. He was a state champ in 2017 with a 52-0 record that included an Ironman title over 15 seed Mitch moore from Rutgers. Won a state title over Alan Hart a top 10 kid last year for Missouri also. Looks like he took some time off wrestling as he is only listed as a junior. Spencer Lee won an Ironman title the same year he did and graduated last year. Does anyone know his story? I wonder why he never went division 1 and sat out many years. Definitely is good enough. If I were o a coach at Kent State or Cleveland State or OU I would definitely try to grab him if he has interest at D1 level. If anyone else has any information on him please share. Intrigued on his story.

Why would he want to go to Kent or Cleveland State? More Ohio high school talent should go DII.

Nothing wrong with going d2 but when you have the resume and results that he has it looks like he could be a legitimate AA threat in d1. Ohio state obviously doesn’t neeed a 141 pounder, so just trying to help out the other teams in state lol. I’m sure he’s on some programs radars. Congrats and good luck to him in his future. Any other d2 or d3 kids national champs from Ohio? I know Jacob Decatur won it a couple years back.

Michael Patrella from Bishop Hartley is a two time defending national champ also. He wrestles at Baldwin Wallace. Must have been a late bloomer as he never finished higher than 7th at state.

Wrestling at top D1 program requires a level of commitment many just don't want. The sport/life balance is much more friendly at the "lower" levels.

Flo had a good interview with Donathan after the finals. He spoke to being homeless at one point and also suffering a collapsed lung. He opened up about challenges with school. Wish the interview was longer.

Great redemption story. Obviously the kid has a ton of talent.

I have it in my head that he was very small. Was he a 103/106 pounder as a senior? That may have been part of why he didn't go D1. I believe he was highly ranked nationally, but at a pretty small weight class.

He was 132 runner up in 2016 and 132 champ in 2017

He also had a brother who won a title over Andonian and is now at Grand Valley. Both were big talents who won excellent D1 weights as seniors, but for whatever reason didn't end up at a D1 school, i'm assuming there are expalantory factors. Love the redemption story, though.
