Discussion Topic: Where Does Mendez Title Rank?
Hank Kornblut added to this discussion on March 23, 2024

I texted a member of this forum and mentioned that Mendez winning so spectacularly ranked very high on the list of greatest Buckeye title performances in my opinion.

He strummed his guitar then mentioned Snyder over Gwiz in OT as being special (agreed).

Another former Bucks wrestler brought up Myles Martin over Bo Nickal(also agreed).

Then I recalled Jaggers beating Chad Mendes on one leg which was pretty amazing.

Still, a lefty standing granby to avoid giving up the winning takedown which you turn into your own shot and score against Penn State is absolutely incredible.

Congrats Jesse.

Any others come to mind?

I remember in Cleveland, OSU's Mitch Clark teched Vertus Jones in the first period to win his NCAA title. Took him down, put the boots in and turned him and turned him and turned him...the announcer said "Jones not only went to school at West Virginia but at Cleveland State University tonight on center mat".

Do you put Logan’s win over Jordan Oliver? Certainly the most controversial. This one is big because it represents the longest stretch in TRs coaching tenure without a champ. Now you could contend that Kollin was likely to win in 2020, but we were pretty spoiled from the late 2000’s up through 2018. What did we have 12 champs in 9 years, something like that.

He's shrewd.

Over and over he makes the correct technique/tactical decision right when it needs to be made.

Mike Pucillo over Jake Varner was huge. If I recall it came down to a tiebreaker.

Tough to decide. 1.Jaggers over Mendez was epic. 2.Tommy's first title over Mocco. 3.Martin over Nickal 4.Pucillo over Varner 5.Logiebear over Ramos. I'm still processing the Mendez win. I have to let it sink in before I decide where it fits on the list.

Yeah...thought about that one...I remember how happy I was when there was no call at the end.

All the Buckeye titles are so sweet. Especially the first for any given wrestler.

The Stieber/JO one probably ranks highest for me.

One I haven't seen mentioned here is Tomasello's, probably because his finals match was the decrescendo of his tournament. However, leading up to that, he knocked off 2x Champ Jesse Delgado at Big Tens, and undefeated Alan Waters in the semis.
