Be curious to see how many kids with the free covid year actually take it.

There are a ton of guys with one more year. Could starocci be a 5 timer?

I know complaining about age is seen as whiney but being older, at almost every level, is an advantage. Less so in college, but absolutely in HS.

I saw Bassett saying he was a 17 y/o sophomore and people shouldn't complain about it.

Two things can be true:

1. Within the rules, not much to say.

2. Being older is an advantage.

To be fair Bassett isn’t doing anything new. Bouzakis, mendes, and Feldman were all 19 when they graduated. It is more common that not with these elite wrestlers. Basset would all American as a 17 year old in college it doesn’t really matter. Just like some people take a college redshirt or don’t. Is redshirting in college cheating? Mendes could be going for four if he redshirted. Cael wouldn’t be undefeated if he didn’t redshirt.

Roman bravo young repeated 8th grade twice and just played video games and wrestled all day and did no schooling.

I believe Kollin Moore graduated at 17 years old which is impressive.

Nick -

You’re proving my point.

It’s legal and is what it is. Not much to say.

But it’s an advantage.

Again, both can be true.

Just can't seem to understand when this covid madness will end.

Starocci is a 4X champ with titles in 21, 22, 23, 24. How is he still able to have eligibility? Is this still because of the covid year?

Very sick of the same guys hanging around. Think of the opportunities these guys are stealing from younger wrestlers, let alone the money...

Both are 100% true.

...and I'm not sold that BB would be an AA right now.

Sleep and video games and wrestling, "that's all I did," for a whole year.
"I didn't have any friends," "I didn't see anyone."

Wow.
That's really, really sad.

Ok, so he repeated 8th grade once, not twice. (Repeating twice would indicate that he actually attended 8th grade 3x).

I know there are plenty of Ohio wrestlers who have repeated 8th grade for athletic reasons.

Even so, the no-school-for-a-year while I play video games every day part is pretty curious.

The 21 season did not count for eligibility. So anyone who was a true freshman in 21 that competed in 21-22-23-24 will have one year left. A true freshman in 21 who competed in 21 but then redshirted in 22, 23, or 24, will have 2 years left. And then anyone who is in weird eligibility scenario due to gray shirting, injury, olympic redshirt, etc. will have 1 additional year beyond normal assuming they wrestled in 21.

Legality =/= morality. “Redshirting” your kid for athletic reasons in high school is equal parts chicken s$@&, and effective.

There is probably 3-4 threads on yappi about this topic. It’s a pretty interesting read.

I believe PA is trying to stop this by having kids lose a year of HS eligibility if a kid is held back in 8th grade for athletics. Not sure how you police that but interesting idea.
