Discussion Topic: So Who's Running Ohio State Wrestling...
Hank Kornblut added to this discussion on May 6, 2024

Guys in the transfer portal, recruits competing in big events, NIL monies to be had or found, offseason workouts, alums to contact....

Tom Ryan is still hospitalized.

Who's running the program? I assume Jaggers but I don't know anything for certain.

Crickets, huh.

The big question is how will this accident impact Tom Ryan's ability to do his job? All of us are grateful he's alive and will recover but his physical injuries are significant. I don't imagine he's going to be on the mat any time soon.

Is he going to morph into a different role in his position as head coach? Is it possible he's going to have to retire?

I don't want to be unfair to coach. He's done a remarkable job and we're fortunate to have him in Columbus. But David Taylor heading to Oklahoma State changes the landscape of the sport once again. And the Bucks have to be considered to be in weaker position currently due to Tom Ryan's injuries.

At a time when NIL money is paramount to compete and some of the greatest recruits in USA history are making collegiate choices, how do the Bucks respond?

Yes, it's been a lot, but I have stepped up to fill in the gaps. Please send wagyu to sustain me.

Wagyu could be considered an NIL.

Tom Ryan. Other than in-person recruiting, I'm not sure what he can't do from the hospital.

From all accounts Anthony Ralph is the head recruiter so not sure it hurts recruiting much.

Knowing Tom Ryan, I highly doubt he is sitting idly by watching Netflix with his phone turned off.

He has a competent staff that can fill in the gaps until he's back to full strength.

With all seriousness, I imagine TR and Sasso have already laid down challenges re who gets back faster, can do more sooner, etc.

D.T. will probably have an immediate bump in recruiting. I imagine there will be loads of cash for NIL. But he isn’t iconic like Cael.

Having Logie and J will keep us running just fine. . .

He is iconic like Cael. The last 6 years have put D.T. in that same category. D.T.'s int'l career was emphatically better than Caels.

I see it differently simply because of the 4 time 159-0 vs. 2 time and getting pinned in the finals one year.

D.T. is probably the 2nd most popular amateur wrestler in the USA (JB). He has over 660k followers, a signature shoe, and a huge platform. He is the definition of an icon and will instantly change the recruiting pipeline in college wrestling.

Collegiately I agree with you. Overall icon status for today's kids, JB and D.T. are it -- they never even saw Cael wrestle. That makes a huge difference.

Agree with you 100%. Cael was a college legend but never won world gold. David is on a short list of guys who have won NCAA, World, and Olympic titles.

I agree even more with the fact that kids today never saw Cael wrestle. When I started coaching the club at the University of Akron in 2014 I had a kid who asked "Who's Rulon?" I had an underclassmen this year who didn't know who Logan Stieber was - I almost threw him off the balcony, until he told me that he didn't even start wrestling until 2017...

You still should have -- just on principle alone. LOL

I think Hank raises a fair question. There’s no doubt that his staff won’t skip a beat. Ralph will continue to recruit, Jags is the head coach in all but name, and I’m sure he, Logan, and Bo are organizing for camps, planning training, and developing athletes.
What you don’t have is the driver of one of the core key culture components of the program. Any of us that have been around, talked to, or listened to Tom speak know what a dynamic and engaging person he is. He has a unique ability to connect with people and speak to fans, families, and wrestlers in a very unique way.
If you ask me I’d say in the short term the biggest concern is impact on recruiting. If you don’t think this raises a question in Marcus Blaze’s mind you’re kidding yourself. Tom is a closer, and right now he’s on the shelf in a tight completion with Penn State.
