I agree it has been a good tourney for the Bucks. But fortunes sway on the outcome of single matches. Let's see how Bouzakis and D'Emilio do with tough cons matches to start the day.
As far as 197 goes, I hope the plan is to move up Shumate next season and let them compete.

Bucks day 2 comp.
McCrone v Provo Stanford (Win here gets Flynn/Volk winner)
Nic vs. Cardinal SDSU (Win here gets Nagao/Chelbove winner)
Mendez vs. Hardy - Mendez in a close one
Dylan vs. Rathjen - Iowa by 5-7
Wilcox vs. Swenson SDSU - Swenson in a close one
Welsh vs. Ruth - Loss 2-1 and 4-1. Can he turn that around?
Ryder vs. Dugan Prin (Win here gets MSU/Berge winner)
Feldman vs. Kerk (loss here and could see Heindselman/Pitzer/Bucknavich in blood round)
Go Bucks'

The thought that keeps arising is that if you can't finish the shot, you don't deserve to win the match. Watched this play out numerous times. Match on the line and no high end finishing skills. Albeit everything else being super quality.
So many matches in which wrestlers get confused about how to win the position. Plus, the referees have been letting positions play out and giving plenty of time to work before calling a stalemate. It's opposite of the quick stalemate calls that I'm used to.
Any who, this tournament never disappoints in terms of wrestling and excitement but plays monstruous in terms of individual disappointments.

Quote from Pat Costilow's post:
|
"Man, I thought Ryder was going to knock off Salazar, he spent most of the third period in exactly the ties and positions we have seen him be so dangerous from, but he couldn't generate anything against Salazar, who is quietly having a fantastic season. Maybe a missed opportunity there, but it may have been a freshman performance more than anything."
|
Salazar is a big bulky 184, and it seemed like Ryder was having trouble pulling the trigger on his moves. He could barely get his arms locked around him. Or he may be feeling the effects of a long grueling tournament as a true freshman. But Pat, I was thinking the same thing you were. Let's see what he does today.

Re: Geog
I obviously have a bias for the St. Eds wrestlers
I was more excited fo Geog to commit than I was with Paddy or any other recent Eagle.
I truly believe he is too undersized for the weight.
If I'm Tom Ryan I really have to evaluate 197- Does Geog build some muscle? Do I shift focus on Shumate starting next year?
This weight has quite a few of the top guys clearing out next year, so it may be more wide open, but I think TR should keep an eye on the transfer portal.

Salazar learned from Pinto v Rogotzke. Stay out of trouble and pick an opening. It doesn't matter. Rogotzke is going to win at least one title. He's just getting better and better at what he does

Nic B is looking awesome, up 12-2.. and right on cue gets takendown. :(
...and again. Tom WISELY throws a brick because Nic needs the breather. Current score 13-8.
Vito, on the eye test, is the class of 133.
