Discussion Topic: Jason Johnstone transferring to Kent State?
Christopher Henderson added to this discussion on June 28, 2008
I just watched an interview with Jim Andrassy on Flowrestling and he said the Golden Flashes are getting a transfer this offseason. Coach said that he is a national qualifier, but can't say who it is until it is more official.
Jason Johnstone makes perfect sense because might be getting pushed out of his spot by Palmer and Nemec, and would fill in a weak spot for KSU. He doesn't have to sit a year because it's a different conference. Jason is also from Massillon, which is close to Kent.
I hope the transfer takes place. The Buckeyes don't really need him, and the Flashes with a good 157 would have a solid lineup next season.
125: Nic Bedelyon
133: Dan Mitcheff
141: Drew Lashaway
149: Clint Sponseller
157: Jason Johnstone
165: Obie Simpson
174: Chris Estep
184: Dustin Kilgore
197: Mike Blackwell
285: Jermail Porter
They have four legitimate AA contenders. That would be a great way to end the 22 year drought.

Mr. Henderson- I’m not sure if what you say has any truth to it, but the truth is Jason Johnstone is a great wrestler. If you are a KSU fan, a rumor such as this should excite you. I; however, am both an OSU and a Johnstone fan and would hate to see such a mat technician wrestle any place other than The Ohio State. I do not care how deep a program is there is always room for kids like Johnstone in the room.

So he'll beat Nemec out for the spot? It would be a great battle...
Either Nemec loses a year of eligibility (or they redshirt Sponseller and bump Nemec up to 165), or Johnstone is done at OSU because this will be his fifth year.

and the ANSWER is 174 Eric Decker.
he was a 3X NY state champion and an NCAA qual 2 years ago, took 3rd in the ACC for Virginia Tech last season but didnt get to the NCAA's as the ACC gets only 14 Quals. He is leaving Virginia Tech and going to Kent St, he has 2 years of eligibilty left. This is a feather in Kent's hat !!
Jim Andrassy and Josh Moore doing great job there. Overshadowed by the rennaisance at Ohio St U, but Kent is definitely on the upmove, too.

I guess since Rella is at Ohio State that knocks Decker out at 174 thus the reason he is going to Kent State now. I think with him and Kilgore in the lineup it will be a nice 1-2 punch there.

not so sure it was fear of Rella, after all Decker has accomplished as much as Rella in hs & college too.
Decker ruled Ohio st U out before Rella trf was a known fact. Had more to do with certain academic choices available or not available to him.
Ohio St U is an asskicker academically anymore
. i was at the barber shop talking to a long time football coach i have known, brains run in the family, both parents are math teachers. He sent one of his children to Northwestern U, matter of fact.
But he told me his daughter was elated she just got admitted to Ohio St U, that she almost didnt make the cut
.

Ohio State has beefed up the standards to their school. They have gotten way out of control on what they want. Many of us that attended there realize that we wouldn't have gotten in today like we did back then.

Dan i cant agree with "out of control", imo nothing wrong with high standards.
Fact is standards sunk ---collapsed actually--- during Vietnam Era, thats when Ohio St U introduced so-called "remedial" courses,
in other words courses to teach incoming freshman what they should have learned in high school. i was at Ohio st U then to witness it. That was absurd--- but that is when standards in society, in all areas, began to sink.
so as an alum, i applaud their new higher standards personally. If i couldnt have got in today, so be it (but i would still have got in).

Decker was announced as having transferred to Old Dominion. Did he change his mind?
Also, as far as 157 goes for Ohio State, Johnstone is the returning 4th place Big Ten finisher. I watched him go against the best wrestlers in the country and he held his own. If he can continue to grow into the weight class, Johnstone should certainly challenge for an AA spot next season.
Nemec would have to be very good to beat him out.

Just checked InterMat to make sure my mind wasn't fuzzy. Decker is listed as having transferred to Old Dominion.

its Decker (as surely as Obama's middle name is Hussein, and as surely as Jeff Jordan got screwed when the NWCA failed to name him HS Coach of the Year).
HOWEVER, there is the CAVEAT in that it is Not certain UNTIL the transfer actually enrolls in school, and i don't know if he has enrolled yet. I'm giving myself an out
. A transfer does Not sign a Letter of Intent, they sign a letter of Financial Aid or something like that.
Enrollment is the deal closer.
Nemec will be plenty good, i think he will give Johnstone quite a battle.
i watched Nemec in Fargo following his junior year, he was in the toughest pool in the tourn, all the names he beat: he beat Caldwell who
pinned Metcalf
this season, he beat Scott Winston
who was never beaten
in NJ, he beat Medina an NCAA qual and beat him bad, among others.
Nemec beat them with super aggressive hard nosed wrestling on his feet (and in folkstyle he has a nice Turk on top too). He never was good on bottom though, so i think how good he is will depend on how much he has improved on bottom, and i don't know the answer.

Mr. Morrow- I think you are mistaken. Nemec is a great kid and will be an asset to OSU, but he will not beat Jason. Nemec's technique is no where near Jason's. Don't get me wrong these two will battle, but as it is Jason is the better wrestler. Nemec is young and I am sure we will see great things from him in the future, but Jason will be the AA @ that weight this year.
