Discussion Topic: My candidates for the Cleveland State job...

1. Joe Heskett -- Health permitting, he's a very solid candidate. Smart, charismatic and well-respected throughout the state.
2. Matt Dernlan -- He's done a fantastic job as Director of Operations for Penn State wrestling. His recruiting in particular has been a crucial factor in that program's recent surge towards the top. From Ohio which matters.
3. Lou Rosselli -- A lot of experience and his time at Ohio State has allowed him to get established in the state. Can he recruit? Don't know... but he has few rivals in terms of pure coaching talent. Strikes me as highly organized and capable.
4. Tom Rowlands -- Can't imagine him leaving Columbus but they'd be silly not to ask.
5. Shawn Nelson -- He's established himself as a top-notch coach in D2 and has done it with less money than most of the best programs at that level. Prepped at North Royalton where he won 3 state titles. Former D1 All-American.
6. Jim Heffernan -- Would one of the most respected D1 assistants leave Illinois to come home? He was a finalist for the Buckeye job so I'm not sure he'd consider Cleveland State. Still, the former St. Edward star and national champion has to be someone to contact.
7. Roger Chandler -- Another former St. Edward star that has considerable coaching experience at the D1 level. Not sure if he's still coaching.
8. Mike Kulczycki -- Has been on Michigan's staff for several years. He's a former St. Edward star and D1 All-American.
9. Jamie Milkovich -- If there's one guy to consider from the high school ranks, Jamie is the guy. He's still relatively young and very smart. I actually think he'd do a great job although I doubt he'd leave Maple Heights due to financial considerations.
10. John Heffernan -- Worthy of consideration for obvious reasons.
11. Bobby Douglas -- Probably no chance but if he still has the coaching itch, they'd be crazy not to hire him. My guess is he's well-paid for his administrative work at Iowa State.

As far as Rosselli goes, I'm sure that he would at least be able to bring in good lightweights. A coach of his caliber, with his ability to develop lightweights would pull candidates in that weight range, I imagine.
Nelson, I think, in particular could be brought in, and has a lot of upside on the DI level.
Additionally, as far as Heskett goes, it seems to me that one of his duties with OSU has been to keep watch over the wrestler's academic performance, and something like that would be necessary at CSU, given the past there, so that could work out well.

I think you could see Nelson or Dernlan there. Nelson already having head coaching experience would be a great replacement.
The big question is though can they recruit top notch talent to come to CSU a campus that really is all that great.

I don't expect Cleveland State to land "top-notch" talent. I think their current recruiting class -- with guys like Mencini, King, and Michaels -- is pretty good. Keller is obviously an outrageous "get" for the program. He may well be gone, however, with Jack's resignation. But the key for whomever coaches at CSU is to land the solid guys, improve them, and keep them moving forward academically.

One factor I think that might determine how attractive the job is to potential candidate is to what degree CSU is willing to commit to the program - I'm thinking in terms of camps and/or the club/open mat program.
The commuter school nature of CSU hurts the "lure" of this job, as does the nature of CSU's graduate programs (getting GA's). The talent pool in NE Ohio and surrounding helps make the job more attractive, and potential opportunities to connect with this constituency.
Of those mentioned, having zero inside info, I would say that Chandler and Kulczycki are the most feasible to get and qualified candidates.

I agree. Leave these guys off of your list. I really like the staff we have at Ohio State.

"Drew Pariano"

No way, Hank. Not a chance in a million he would apply. Drew will be the next head coach at his alma mater, Northwestern U.

I would love to see one of Ohio's greats get it. I think a St. Edward guy would be great fit given the history of the school locally and nationally. I vote for Andy Hrovat. He's coming off an Olympic bid, has a great chance to medal, he's 28 years old, and has a degee from Michigan. This would be a top-notch young guy that comes from two great programs, Michigan and St. Edward. My other choice would be Erik Burnett for all the obvious reasons.

Hank, there will be some outstanding College assistants apply, if CSU is seen as a school that is serious about wrestling.
a big factor favoring a COLLEGE coach is the ADMIN part of the job, remember that there are alot of paperwork/admin details to running a college program--- its NOT just on the mat or on the field or arena.
you got know about Title IX, financial aid, APR, eligibility issues, personal matters OFF the mat, dealing with your Asst AD, dealing with the colege beurocracy, budget matters --- its complex, a College head coach has to know about the ADMIN area, too.

Bill: I think Hrovat would be a great selection but it probably hurts that he's currently training for the olympics. He really couldn't start the job until after Beijing. Not impossible...but difficult.
Incidentally, someone mentioned John Storey as a candidate on another forum. I'd imagine that CSU wants someone younger but thought you'd get a kick out of hearing it.
Bob: Just trying to keep this conversation going. I'm aware of what you're saying. I do think Burnett, in spite of his lack of college coaching experience, would be a worthwhile candidate. One can learn these things if one is motivated to do so. You just find a mentor, call him up, and ask him these things until you know them yourself.

yes Hank, i agree it can be learned, of course it can,
BUT no College AD wants to hire an OJT Head coach --- the point i was making is that a College AD wants to hire a coach who already knows these things
, to a degree at least. That generally rules out a high school coach from getting a Head college Div I job.
when is the last time a High School coach moved directly to a College Div I wrestling HEAD coaching job ??? there may be an exception out there somewhere, but i cant think of any myself.
