Reece Humphrey has defeated wrestlers from Russia and Kazakhstan to reach the finals of the University World Freestyle Championships. He will take on Japan later today.
Keith Gavin and Brent Jones will wrestle for the bronze.
This has been an excellent showing by the USA University Freestyle Squad. Coach Rosselli has done a great job. Hopefully, they'll finish strong.

I hope this experience over the summer will put Reece right up their with J and Mike. Reece was so, so close last season to "breaking through" to the top level. Given his pedigree, I don't see why he won't next season. I saw him at Akron U. in April and he was terrific on his feet in freestyle. I love when he gets his head under the armpit and lifts the opponent up into a bear hug. Great stuff <excited>

That is an impressive feat by Humphrey. OSU's Triggas has also performed well in the off-season.
Did anyone watch the OSU match with Kent in January at 125 and 133 ?
With the way Triggas and Humphrey have perormed in FS and GR in the off-season, you would think they were a couple steps ahead of Kent's Nick Bedelyon (25) and Dan Mitcheff (33). But really, the Kent wrestlers dominated these two matches and both Ohio state guys looked pretty gassed throughout the match.
OSU went on to pretty well dominate the meet, but the first two weights - the Kent starters controlled the matches - which is more surprising now in hindsight after seeing what Triggas and Humphrey are doing competitively this offf-season.
Maybe it was just one night - or prehaps Bedelyon and Mitcheff are better than they are given credit for? Any thoughts?

Joe: I remember those matches very well, as I made the trip to watch the Buckeyes. Great night, great atmosphere and great wrestling.
The one thing that sticks out in my mind from that night (other than the speeding ticket I received less than four miles from my house) is the two sets of back the 125 pounder was able to get one Nikko...the good ol' half nelson! Very impressive with sound technique and quality pressure.
With those first two in the bag and 141, 165 and 295 still to go, it was shaping up to be quite a dual.

But we know what happened after the 133 pound match! <sign_oh>
I hope the Golden Flashes come down again. I like the team and they have a local talent or two.

Humphrey lost a tight three period bout for the gold. He lost two clinches at end of periods and won one bout 4-0. Tough loss but a great performance.
Gavin won the bronze.

I don't know the details but evidently Reece was victimized by a really bad officials call. Oh, well. Another American wrestler gets shafted by the international refs. That's happened so often it's almost a cliche.

Joe: I saw the first two matches the same way you did. Maybe not domination in the classic sense but it was hard to get the feeling the guys were going to be able to get it done that night.
Having said that, Triggas and Humphrey appear to have improved dramatically. It is hard not to think what Humphrey and Jaggers could do up a weight. The Buckeyes could start a line-up of Triggas, Livingston, Humphrey at a better weight and Jaggers at 149. Given the improvement Triggas and Hump have made with the talent in the room and the coaching, I can't imagine Livingston isn't somewhat improved. Then we get an extra year from Palmer.
I know it has been written he doesn't want to shirt and I believe he can beat Metcalf. I also think Jaggers has what it takes. He doesn't seem to gas easily and he is really slick against even stronger wrestlers. With J's skill level and quickness I could see Metcalf's bull rushes walking right into J's strengths. I don't think Jenkins has anything talent-wise on J and he did similar things early in his matches with Metcalf; the question is can J hang for three and I believe he can. Metcalf isn't a large 149, either.
Hope I'm not hijacking too much but when did we have these choices with the lightweights at OSU?

I'm a huge J Jaggers fan and actually picked him to win an NCAA title at the beiginning of the season. That said, I think he would be a solid favorite to repeat at 141 and a pretty heavy underdog against Metcalf. Jaggers did in fact have some issues with gassing last year particularly in dual meets (see Wisconsin and Iowa). I think this had alot more to do with the weight cut than Jaggers training. Jaggers was much better in tournaments, and in fact was very good at Vegas, Big 10, and of course NCAA. Looking at the other side of the coin, J Jaggers at 149 would be much different than Jaggers at 141. 149 Jaggers 3 years ago lost by a point to Schlatter (when he was indestructable) and thumped NCAA CHamp Gregor Gillespie. J has excellent defense to leg attacks particularly head inside singles like Metcalf likes. J is also an excellent mat wrestler and could possibly ride Metcalf (although Lance couldn't) and take some juice out of him. The more time you spend riding Metcalf the less he is on his feet with him and his tank becomes less of an issue. In the end I think Jaggers best chance would be to lock up a cradle or catch him in a scramble and pin him. Metcalf has shown himself to be suceptable to the big move (see Caldwell and the Missouri kid) and Jaggers is certainly a great pinner. In the end I think everybody stays put for a year then Hump moves up to 141 (which I think would be a better weight for him) as a senior. What could be a possibility with the depth the Bucks now have? Is Livingston spelling Humphrey for dual meets while Humphrey sits or bumps up and spells Jaggers? The allows guys to be able to rest their bodies and be healthier for when it counts.

Congrats to Reece. It is a shame that he outscores his opponent but loses on the clinch. I think Reece could definately be in the mix for the Olympics in 2012 if he can stay at this weight.
